House Hippos are indeed real. We have them.
Either that or the rescue gave us English Bulldogs. I swear the rescue told us they were hippos. (They are.)

I love that I've now been in this country long enough that these jokes make sense to me. When I first moved here in 2000, I was really confused. The Game of Thrones 'ice wall' joke has me floored. This is good.

I live in rural SE Ontario. Letterkenny is only the lightest of exaggerations.

I grew up in rural Northwestern Ontario and it's not dramatically different from up there, either. I lived in Sudbury for a while. The parking lot where the skids hang out next to the Dollar Store where Bonnie McMurray works? Yeah, that's a convenience store and I lived in an apartment building on the opposite side of the store. And on the other side of the parking lot is the bar they used as Modean's (I think it's a furniture store now, which is why they needed Modean's II). It's cleaned up quite a bit, but when I lived there it was one of the roughest neighbourhoods in town, and bud do I have some stories about de-gens for you...
