How animal shelters use social media to get overlooked dogs adopted. [SLBuzzfeed]

"She’s developed an unofficial tiered system: If a dog has been in the shelter for a few weeks, sometimes simply replacing their intake mugshot with a crisp professional photo will do the trick. If they need more help than that, she’ll bust out a cute accessory, a silly toy, or an outfit from the rolling rack. Somewhere in between, there might be a cute, 30-second Instagram video of the dog. The nuclear option for the shelter’s neediest dogs? Pajamas."

We didn't have pets when I was growing up, so when I got a dog as an adult, the dog I certainly intend to be the first of a rich full life of many dogs, I went to the best respected breeder in my region to get the exact purebred dog that I knew would fit the demands of my life. If I was going to try my hand at first dog, I was going to do it on easy mode.

I figured that once I knew the general motions of how to dog I would get rescue dogs from then on.

It wasn't until I started following Old Friends Senior Dog Sanctuary on facebook that I knew I had to surround myself with little elderly woofers. As soon as I move to a place where I can have multiple animals, I'm seeking out senior dogs. I mean just look at this sweet old baby.

I am disappointed @darth, who sometimes donates to the SFSPCA for animal cuddle parties and invites the internet to come, doesn't get a shout-out.

Very cute!

They really lost me in the article though when they claimed that dogs have supplanted cats as mascots of the internet

WRONG DEAD WRONG

Sometimes I think this "supplanting" is partly a result of the internet growing outside of the realm of young people, tech employees, and grad students, who find that cats require less space and time for their maintenance, and into the wider realm of families, teens living at home, and older people with yards. I dunno. It could also just be that dogs are more likely to distribute comfort and joy for free, whereas most cats make you earn it. (Or they don't! Maybe they sit on their driveways and demand bellyrubs from passersby. You never know, with cats.)

Our local ABC affiliate, WTEN, has featured "Steve Caporizzo's Pet Connection" for years and years, where as a feature outside his weather report, he introduces the viewers to a pet from the shelter who is up for adoption. Dog in TV Studio. Broadcast Gold.

I'm contemplating a FT gig somewhere far away (Nashville-ish, TN) from home (Albany, NY) and one thing I'm glad of is that it's not NYC Financial Services and -- well, I CAN'T take our dog Miranda away from the Wife and Kids while I'm working away from home, so I'll have to get another dog when ( IF ) I'm in Tennessee.

The shelter I volunteered has a cat equivalent to the pajama trick. If you have a grumpy cat that has been there for ages, give them a lion cut and a new name and they will be adorable and adopted immediately!

Who's a good boy? The dog in the pink pajamas is a good boy.

The theory goes that cats are much more charming in still images than in video, and dogs are much more charming in video than in still images. As video became more ubiquitous, more high-quality dog content was produced, and an internet that had lots of high-quality cat content for ages was hungry for a new cute thing to give a weird personality to.
