I like the part with the body horror.

Awesome. I am glad to know cyriak is still out there, doing his weird, disturbing, awesome thing.

That was just some kind of weird thing someone made for no good reason. It doesn’t even make any kind of sense.

The part with the teeth growing into mouths was clever.

(Slarty, if you're not familiar with Cyriak, he's a musician/animator with a very distinctive style of recursively edited video clips full of fractanimals. The one with cows might be my favorite.)

(there's even an interpretive dance involving the one with cows)

Yeah, I watched the previously and I’m just angry that people can’t just make normal art like flowers and rainbows and pleasant music. This is scary and confusing to me. I’ll bet this cyriak fellow even smokes a lot of drugs!

Be normal people!

I had a tooth extracted this week and this is probably exactly what happened while I was under anesthesia.

Everybody talks about body horror but what about body romcom. Why can't a sentient pustule have a meet-cute with a bone that's slowly decaying into sponge. Get Tom Hanks involved, he can play a finger that has too many joints, an endless series of joints, impossible and terrible and quietly charming on an awkward first date.

This individual has a vision that is unique....and quite disturbing. It's really quite nightmare-ish, actually, and I'm pretty sure that I never want to lay eyes on any of it ever again.

Slarty, let's go have a beer and chat about someone more palatable, like Heironymus Bosch or something, yeah?

What would deep dream see in this?

honestly it'd probably just spit out something deeply ultra-normal for once, with all entities having only their general, entity-specific, standard numbers and placements of limbs, eyes, and teeth

Oh no, cyriak, why?

How cyriak videos are made according to cyriak.

I swear all of the non-commercial mainstream cyriak songs are all variations of the same song and weird sort of Shepard Tone chord progression. I'm tempted to rip all of them and see how they play or mix in sequence.

This is weird, even for Cyriak

wow we are so different! I watch these with the biggest goofy grin on my face, because they are so awesomely delightfully weird.

I keep meaning to watch one of his streams to see how it's done (beyond it being 'just' billions and billions of iterating layers in After Effects)... but I fear destroying the magic

This oughta shake up the YT recommendations. I had way too many water slide videos.

The video Eskmo commissioned for We Got More is probably the most normal least disturbing Cyriak there is.

I don't know old Cyriak is but I'm guessing he recently had his first colonoscopy.

I’m with Slarty. What’s wrong with a proper tune? Walt Disney knew how to do it. Why can’t things be nice any more?

That previously... it’s like somebody jammed a cat into some kind of scanner. No good can come of shenanigans like that.

Is it just me, or is this highly reminiscent of Flying Lotus and his movie Kuso?
posted by cyclotronboy at 5:55 AM on July 13, 2018

OK, this one was particularly gross, but I'm glad to see he's out there still doing his thing. A lot of it is too much for me, but my whole family still enjoys watching Cycles.

i noticed in the recent cumberbatch dr strange movie they did some cyriak finger recursion moves in one of the trip out sequences...

I am ridiculously fond of Cyriak but oh the teeth. Good lord the teeth. I have spent too much time at the dentists lately anyway and this is not helping. Still, I agree with him about indigestion, it really does feel full of teeth sometimes.

I don't know why I like cyriak so much. I can't stand body horror, but I like cyriak. I think it's because his stuff crosses the line (for me) from horror to absurdity. I have always had a love of the absurd.

In a weird way, I think it's not horror. We might find it horrifying, but most of his characters, or creatures or whatever they are are perfectly happy, dancing in their totally fluid, trans-formative bodies.

For my money, "malfunction" is still the best cyriak video, but this one is pretty good. As someone who's never tried hallucinogens, I think these videos tell me "Nope, I'm good, thanks".

In a weird way, I think it's not horror.

That's the thing of body horror, in my mind; while it's often delivered with horrific intent or in a literally horrific context, the real power of body horror as a concept or an experience is that the horror is in the strangeness, the unfamiliarity of what we expect to be familiar. If my fingers grew twice as long, they'd still be fingers and in fact might be very useful ones at that...but that is not the length of fingers! That is not how fingers should be, in all my experiences inside my familiar body, and the strangeness and unreliability creates a sense of horror and of alienation of the self based on that ultimately arbitrary difference.

Seth Brundle transforming into human fly is body horror writ large, but the story of the film is what makes him into a villain; if he'd transformed into a human fly hybrid and then just...decided to chill and just be, and if the narrative had allowed him, the third act of that film would have just been literary characterization instead of a monster movie showdown. It'd still have been body horror, but not horror-horror.

Cyriak's videos absolutely are not Horror. They're absolutely teeming with body horror. It's a disjuncture worth enjoying!

My all-time favourite is Cycles. I spent a slightly confused afternoon trying to learn how to play the music on the guitar. It's harder than you'd think.

And, of course, Hand Fingers had a cameo in a recent Marvel movie.

Cyriak makes videos for Flying Lotus. I don't think he had anything to do with Kuso, but Flying Lotus was clearly - ahem - heavily influenced if not.

Ok, I'm pretty sure Slarty was being extra-extra dry and maybe even quoting a movie or something.

Which means you're either being extra-extra-extra dry and I'm missing it or you're actually saying this weird thing about Disney, who did plenty of weird and not so nice things.

If so, there's still an excess of excessively nice, pretty, unthreatening creative things in the world. If you want something like the linked video that's pretty and "nice" try Pogo.

Except he turned out to be a homophobic asshole. So maybe don't.

I've lost track of how many times I've watched Meow Mix. Never fails to boost my mood a bit. It's very low on the body horror scale, of course. But I dig most of his stuff, reminds me of the early days of the Internet when it was much more fun.

Cross Dali and Gilliam with some of that original Owsley LSD, and you get Cyriak, the finest zany animator of his generation, a truly unique artist.
