Tiny Goat Visits

Every Tuesday at the Oregon Zoo, two tiny goats named after Supreme Court Justices visit the other animals. So far, Ruth and Sonia have met seals, a porcupine, elephants, Chupacabra, giraffes, a hornbill, penguins, river otters, and an aardvark.
My small heart has grown three sizes today. 🖤

Aw. The penguins were funny because the goat's were very curious, but the birds were like, "Nope! Nope!"

Look. By the time he died, my husky knew 9 OTHER huskies named Nanuk. I felt like if I had wanted to give him a truly unique name for a dog, I would have needed to name him John or Matt or Michael. Apparently few people name their dogs - let alone their huskies after real people names... So I sort of like the idea of naming goats with people names... but... they did this easy and went with safe, well known names - which have been way too popularized as of late...Would they name a boy goat Anthony Scalia? or are they only going with 'liberalish' judges?
All I'm saying is... if you are going to go with a theme of supreme court justices... don't limit yourself to the living ones. Go all in. Get a horde of goats... get to name one Bushrod Washington - because his parents, John and Hanna, had it right - name your kid something memorable... Also, name the boy after his mother.

I have never thought of giraffes as very tall goats, but it makes a lot of sense.

My son goes to school with a totally cool kid named Banjo. He has sister named India and a brothers named Arlo and Atticus.
Their dog is named James.
I swear, on my life, I am not making that up.

I'm also thinking I missed my calling as a zoo keeper. I wonder what their days are actually like. Are they paid well? How hard is it to get hired? I want to know more!

The Buenos Aires zoo (before it closed, because it was a sad, sad place that mistreated its megafauna) used to have Patagonian maras like Chupacabra just running around free. I went for the first time in my mid-30s and was kind of blown away that (I grew up in the northern U.S.) dozens of these goofy-ass cute, big rodents that I had never even heard of had the run of the joint, and nobody took any more notice of them than as if they were squirrels.
Then later I had a conversation with one of my Argentine friends about where I grew up. He got a giddy excited expression on his face and asked, "have you ever seen SQUIRRELS there?"

Goats are nice :3 If you live in Portland you can go visit the Belmont Goats, which is a herd currently stationed out in Lents! They have visiting hours, and it's super cathartic to go and relax and pet them!

My girlfriend and I went to the Oregon Zoo this Sunday, and we got to meet/pet Ruth and Sonia! They were by far the animals we were most excited to see.
