Donald Glover is brilliant at the slight of hand, and this is a wonderful example. It's also a really beautiful song.

I'm glad you included a link that provided context because I spent most of the video going "wow, this is one entire giant cultural reference thing going on that is entirely outside of my world". Turns out, I've heard of nearly all those people, but have no idea what most of them look like because MTV doesn't exist anymore like it did 30 years ago.

A 2018 answer to What's Goin' On would be much more of a freakout even than Gaye was feeling back in '71 and was opening up his concept album about a Vietnam Vet returning from the war and not understanding the society he was stepping into.
In vibe, yes, but in content, absolutely not.

Yeah, I knew it wasn't really for me, although I knew it also was because it was obviously very deliberate and steeped in culture which affects me even while I don't consume it much.

I've been seeing cardigans and stocking caps (I forget what the kids are calling them these days) all summer. Seems a bit like fashion-over-comfort to me, but who am I to judge? I wear workbooks 350 days a year.

Looking forward to the mashup with Gorrilaz' Humility as my brain has already pretty much done the heavy lifting there.
Now that you mention it, I think they work as companion pieces. Humility (which came out around the beginning of the season) exemplifies the optimism of the beginning of a new summer, and Feels like Summer is the melancholy of summer coming to an end.

Isn't this a good percentage of fashion, particularly for young people? In high school, I remembered plenty of kids who wore their army surplus jackets year-round (I borrowed one for a theater class, and it was really stinky).

The pace of this is perfect for Australian summer, those days when that's your top speed, and there's a sort of drowsiness to it. Your brain is cooking, you're walking through a warm bath while time moves like treacle.

This gives me all the feels; it's that perfect mix of summer drowsiness and compassion (that Kanye moment in the video, but also the lyrics and delivery of lines like "please slow down") coupled with the persistent high-level anxiety that we all try to push down all the time.
It's denial, empathy, fear, despair, coping, and perseverance wrapped up together.

At first, I was like "only Donald Glover would release a summer song on September 1." But watching it, I realized it's actually perfect, because this is about the time people start getting real tired of summer, and this song is actually pretty bleak about summer.
