Childish Gambino - Feels Like Summer Come for the chill vibes, stay for the celebrity cameos. Illustrated by Justin Richburg.

Finally, someone made a song that reflects how I feel about summer.

At first, I was like "only Donald Glover would release a summer song on September 1." But watching it, I realized it's actually perfect, because this is about the time people start getting real tired of summer, and this song is actually pretty bleak about summer.

Donald Glover is brilliant at the slight of hand, and this is a wonderful example. It's also a really beautiful song.

Will Smith is washing a car, perhaps one that he will spend all day waxing?

I don't know if that's Will Smith, but I love that it's an old Volvo brick.

Aw this is sweet. The Michelle Obama / Kanye West bit seemed particularly powerful.

Geoblocked for NZ (VPN, meh). I doubt that's deliberate, but this is the Southern hemisphere, our seasons are just changing and it is indeed starting to feel like summer.

I found a full list of cameos (because I wanted to fact check myself).

I'm glad you included a link that provided context because I spent most of the video going "wow, this is one entire giant cultural reference thing going on that is entirely outside of my world". Turns out, I've heard of nearly all those people, but have no idea what most of them look like because MTV doesn't exist anymore like it did 30 years ago.

WOW that was wonderful. I mean, run downstairs and play it for the kids wonderful. I swear, Donald Glover is a once-in-a-lifetime artist.

The Marvin Gaye vibe is strong on that track, at least to my ears.

This feels like a 2018 answer to What's Goin' On, and there are sonic references to it as well.

A 2018 answer to What's Goin' On would be much more of a freakout even than Gaye was feeling back in '71 and was opening up his concept album about a Vietnam Vet returning from the war and not understanding the society he was stepping into.

In vibe, yes, but in content, absolutely not.

lunasol: At first, I was like "only Donald Glover would release a summer song on September 1."

FWIW, the single came out on July 11, 2018, but for whatever reason, he didn't drop the video until yesterday (Sept. 1, 2018).

hippybear: I spent most of the video going "wow, this is one entire giant cultural reference thing going on that is entirely outside of my world".

There were many great lines and moments from SNL's skit "The Day Beyoncé Turned Black" [YT], but the line “Maybe the song isn’t for us? But usually everything is!” was a wake-up call to my (white, cis-het) self, and I've been taking a beat whenever looking at anything and saying "I don't understand this."

[Which also makes me think of the moment, when in college, I realized I was no longer young. After hearing that a family friend, who was 4 years younger than me, really wanted an old truck, I said without thinking "why would he want to do that? That doesn't make any sense." and I realized ... I was no longer aware of the trends of those in high school.]

Turns out, I've heard of nearly all those people, but have no idea what most of them look like because MTV doesn't exist anymore like it did 30 years ago.

That, too ;) Trying to keep up with trends via Twitter, Instagram and YouTube is not within my current capacity.

Yeah, I knew it wasn't really for me, although I knew it also was because it was obviously very deliberate and steeped in culture which affects me even while I don't consume it much.

Like I said, I was glad for the crib sheets.

I've been seeing cardigans and stocking caps (I forget what the kids are calling them these days) all summer. Seems a bit like fashion-over-comfort to me, but who am I to judge? I wear workbooks 350 days a year.

Looking forward to the mashup with Gorrilaz' Humility as my brain has already pretty much done the heavy lifting there.

I, for one, welcome our C H I L L W A V E o v e r l o r d s.

Now that you mention it, I think they work as companion pieces. Humility (which came out around the beginning of the season) exemplifies the optimism of the beginning of a new summer, and Feels like Summer is the melancholy of summer coming to an end.

I dunno, man, the music seems very relaxed, but the lyrics are about how the world is dying and not many people seem to care or notice and it's freaking me out a little bit because I feel like that every day.

Isn't this a good percentage of fashion, particularly for young people? In high school, I remembered plenty of kids who wore their army surplus jackets year-round (I borrowed one for a theater class, and it was really stinky).

How is it that these lists of cameos are missing Eminem? He's right there playing superhero.

(not bloody Jaden Smith)

The pace of this is perfect for Australian summer, those days when that's your top speed, and there's a sort of drowsiness to it. Your brain is cooking, you're walking through a warm bath while time moves like treacle.

This gives me all the feels; it's that perfect mix of summer drowsiness and compassion (that Kanye moment in the video, but also the lyrics and delivery of lines like "please slow down") coupled with the persistent high-level anxiety that we all try to push down all the time.

It's denial, empathy, fear, despair, coping, and perseverance wrapped up together.

i want a list of all the cameos, the article only focused on some big names. that was for sure Janelle Monae in black&white with the hat skateboarding right? i dunno who the other woman was though.

Seven billion souls that move around the sun
Rolling faster, faster, not a chance to slow down, slow down
Men who made machines that want what they decide
Parents tryna tell the children please slow down, slow down
I know
Oh, I know you know that pain
I'm hopin' that this world will change
(Ooo, I hope this world will change)
But it just seems the same
(It is not the same)
You can feel it in the streets
On a day like this, the heat
It feel like summer
(I feel like summer)
I feel like summer
(I feel like summer)
I feel like summer
Every day gets hotter than the one before
Running out of water, it's about to go down, go down
Air that kill the bees that we depend upon
Birds were made for singing, wakin' up to no sound
No sound
I know
Oh, I know you know my pain (woah, no no no)
I'm hopin' that this world will change
(This world will change, yeah)
But it just seems the same (woah)
I know
Oh, I hope we change
I really thought this world could change
But it seems like the same
I know
Oh, my mind is still the same
I'm hoping that this world will change
But it just seems the same
I know
Oh, I hope we change
