A dazzling solar eclipse... will be on display across a broad swath of the western United States, Mexico, Canada and Asia on Monday, with as much as 99 percent of the sun obscured by the moon. The eclipse will begin at 5:13 p.m. PDT, with best viewing time around 6:20.

NASA charts and how-tos. The unusual part is that for Americans it will occur not at mid-day, but close to sunset, obscuring the sun near the horizon.

Sadly, not visible to anyone in the U.S. east of about Atlanta GA. You'll all just have to tell us how cool it was.

A distant relative of mine, a scientist, got to ride in an RAF jet following the path of totality about 40 years ago. How cool is that?

Another excellent experience would be to sail out to the middle of the ocean to view the eclipse. Spooky.

We'll only get a 1/5th eclipse here in Chicago. It'll look about like any other sunset with the average amount of smog in the air here.

Will someone remind me please?
I'll be at work.
Thanks.

.482 for Seattle--hey, thanks for the link, dhartung!--pooh. I don't think we'll be able to tell the difference. According to Spaceweather.com, by the way, we may be up for aurora tomorrow night, too.

The other thing this makes me think of is The Marriage Of Sun And Moon, an early book by Andrew Weil on various mind altering experiences, with a chapter where he talks about solar eclipses as natural highs--enough so that some retirees and the idle wealthy become globe trotting eclipse junkies--with concomitant official public hysteria over the viewing of them.

The "BIG ONE" is coming August 21, 2017--middle of the day, total eclipse travelling from Charleston, South Carolina to Portland, Oregon. Make your hotel reservations now!

This is happening right now in SF, put a couple of cd's together for an effective make shift filter (the silver kind with no printing on em).
