To elaborate a bit... This is hitting me hard... He was one of my favourite comedians on the News Quiz.

this is absolutely gutting. Like Pendragon, I loved him on News Quiz. Far, far too young.

Fuck this. I love Jeremy Hardy on Radio 4. His live standup was also wonderful.

My Dad the comedy writer worked with him way back in 86 on a BBC Two show that starred Rory Bremner, and always said how nice Jeremy was. Well now they're both gone. Fuck cancer.

The I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue fansite has a tribute to his unique musical contributions to the show. Voice of an angel.

Just this morning I was remembering the time he went off on a rant during the News Quiz and Sandi Toksvig literally begged him to stop, she was laughing so hard. (I believe her exact words were "You need to stop because you're going to kill me.") A comment on Twitter leads me to think that it may have been a rant about bright children. I hope there's a roundup of his best bits, and that that is on it.

kalimac, it's this clip

https://audioboom.com/posts/751466-jeremy-hardy-s-news-quiz-buddha-rant

It's a great clip, though I misremembered the names of the middle-class children as "Flymo and Mezzanine", which my wife reminds me were actually coined by his great friend, the late Linda Smith

To lose both of them so young seems terribly cruel. Fuck cancer, indeed

When I first started listening to the News Quiz, there were only three participants I could remember (other than the host, Sandi Toksvig): Susan Calman, Andy Hamilton and Jeremy Hardy.

Calman was easy: how many tiny, very very Scottish lesbian comics are there? But I mixed up the voices of Andy Hamilton and Jeremy Hardy at first (similar timber/tone). But gradually, I worked them out: Andy Hamilton is crochety and thoughtful (and tiny*, though not as tiny as Calman or Toksvig), and Hardy was crochety and righteously angry.

I will miss that righteous anger so much.

*No, you can't see size on the radio. But their sizes were mentioned often enough to be memorable.

Hardy once said on the News Quiz that when he died, he wanted his remains to be scattered "... not cremated, just scattered". Best I can recall. he suggested distributing them in a series of service station toilets along the M1.

That was one side of him. The other was his 2002 trip to Palestine with the International Solidarity Movement.

Fucking fuck. The cyclones of hyperbole that his rants could ascend into were brilliant.

I'd never heard of him. Been watching youtube for an hour, now. Seems a genuine heroic comedian/activist in the vein of Barry Crimmins, who died just about a year ago. Absolute tragedy.

Like many of you, his increasingly ridiculous rants were a highlight of the News Quiz and I can't imagine what the show will be without them. And at 57, jeez.

I genuinely thought he was older.

Well, fuck, I adored him on the News Quiz. I didn't know why he hadn't been on as much recently, and I had decided to blame Miles. This sucks.

When I first started listening to the News Quiz, there were only three participants I could remember (other than the host, Sandi Toksvig): Susan Calman, Andy Hamilton and Jeremy Hardy.

Me too, plus Fred MacAulay. Sandi and Susan tweeted their remembrances of Jeremy.

Oh, bugger. :(

One of my all time favourites.

Almost the same age as me too.

RIP, funny big-hearted man.

He was the conscience of the News Quiz whilst being extremely funny. I'm not sure how they are going to fill those boots.

Damn!

A decent and very funny man. I'll very much miss his rants on the News Quiz and his enthusiastically terrible singing on Clue.

If you liked Jeremy Hardy's rants on the News Quiz and elsewhere, do seek out Jeremy Hardy Speaks to the Nation which are basically full length versions of those.

Another one here who loved him on the News Quiz. I’m in one of those moments after someone dies when I can’t process the finality of it all. I genuinely can’t conceive of never hearing his voice again when I’m listening to new episodes, or standing in my kitchen cackling over one of his flights of fancy. A very funny, good, man taken far too fucking early.
