"The music I want to hear hasn't been written yet. And I'm going to write it." What music do you want to hear? What books do you want to read? What films do you want to see? What software do you want to use? What are you doing to make it so? A meditation on the brevity of life and the choices we make of how to spend our time on earth. [more inside]

'A Piece of My Mind' is a weekly feature in JAMA in which a physician or other medically-connected person discusses an issue relating to medicine in a non-technical way. These essays usually have to do with the vicissitudes of the human condition seen though a doctor's eyes, and usually revolve around personal experiences with strong emotional meaning to the writer. Most of JAMA is subscription-only, but APoMM seems to be a freebie. Well worth reading, IMO. Not all doctors can write well, and not all have something interesting to say, but every now and then, you come across a gem.

I want more interesting math books for a general audience, and, dammit, I'm going to write them.
(that "more" refers to quantity, not interest. There's lots of =really= interesting books out there.)

If someone else gets to the ones I have thought about, I won't mind, because I'll be reading them.

I'd like to read a book about how the rapture arrives, and the world becomes a better, more peaceful place for those of us left behind.

What music do you want to hear?

The new Sigur Ros, Beck, Radiohead and Arcade Fire albums, dammit. :)

I wouldn't mind hearing U2 shut up about third world debt and go back to releasing kick ass rock and roll albums.

Yeah...third world debt is just sooooo boooooring...

I wouldn't mind hearing that blow jobs cure cancer, that all cops suddenly had to be held totally accountable for their every on duty action, and the Hilton twins were in a high speed SUV crash with the Olsen twins, with no survivors whatsoever.
Brings it right back to the whole "brevity of life" thing.

Ah, but giving, or receiving? Therein lies the rub.

I'd rather hear that blow jobs prevented cancer meself ;-)

more interesting than Bono's megalomaniac ramblings and U2's terribly unimaginative songs anyway...
He wrote what amounts to U2's perfect tag: Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out of

Rob Zombie reportedly started recording because no one else was making music he wanted to hear.

Music I'd like to hear: prog-hop, a melding of progressive and hip-hop. I might be alone here -- making mashups of Dr. Dre and Yes for an audience of one.

Software: an app like SimCity, but does highways correctly and in obsessive detail: so that given enough time, you can create a version of (say) Manchester, NH or any other overlooked city that someone else could recognize.

Books: someone who can write like M. R. James

What am I doing about this? Not much. Pieces of the SimCityish app. I should have started when I was a kid, and had the free time!

I make value judgements of people based on their Amazon.com wish list. I'd like to hear a song about that.

I would like to see a really satisfying, no apologies, mainstream Hollywood, gay male romantic comedy movie. Something on the order of "It Happened one Night" or "When Harry met Sally" for homos.

I know I am stating the obvious for probably everyone here --- the Net is perhaps the best means to distribute/illustrate "The [Insert Noun Here] I Want to [Insert Verb Here]." I could name a thousand nouns that could leverage the Net for distribution/illustration, I cannot think of one noun that cannot; well, at least at this time.

Well, for one, I see that you spent your 2000 New Years Eve book-shopping online. I think that probably says something.

I should also mention that I--too--have items on my wishlist from two years ago. But I'm going to buy them soon. Really.

About 10 years ago, fresh out of college, I was working as a journalist and writing my movie. I asked the smartest, funniest guy I knew to read what I had written so far. He said it was great, but it wasn't a movie, it was an opera, which I realized was true, but I can't write music at all. I carried it with me to Japan. There it sits, behind me on the bookshelf in a bulging folder (lots of research materials, too), ignored for lo these many years. [sigh]
