Famed British DJ and producer Andrew Weatherall passed away today. He was 56. Coverage from The Gaurdian, The BBC, Pitchfork, Resident Advisor, and Optimo’s JD Twitch. Weatherall is best known as the producer of Primal Scream’s Screamadelica and a key launcher of the acid house scene in the UK, one-third of The Sabres of Paradise, and one half of Two Lone Swordsmen.
RIP, producer of One Dove's debut and swan song, Morning Dove White.

I really liked The Woodleigh Research Facility – The Phoenix Suburb (And Other Stories), as it kind of felt like a slightly spooky-sounding followup to Haunted Dance Hall.

His music opened my (then strictly indie-kid) ears to other kinds of music, and I've never looked back.

His show on NTS was really good too - I just discovered it a few weeks ago, sad to hear this news.

Two favorite Weatherall remixes among many:
New Order - Regret (Sabres Slow 'n' Low)
Saint Etienne - Only Love Can Break Your Heart (A Mix in Two Halves)
His Essential Mix sessions from 1993 (the third ever, I've read) and 1996 are excellent. You can download high-quality MP3s of both from the Internet Archive's collection.

Coming late to this thread as I've been AFK for a couple of days, but with reference to
Personally, it was the moment at age 13 I heard Screamadelica for the first time. I was at a boring bbq that my mum had dragged me to with her uni friends, and the host spotted me sitting glumly in a corner next to the CD player. She said "why don't you put some music on? Anything you like!" and I picked Screamadelica because the cover wasn't like anything my parents had on CD, and I was into the idea (if not yet the practice) of psychedelia.
And it was fucking wild. I could hear the things I loved in my dad's jazz and prog collection, the jangly folk from my mum's, and something new and weird and immersive and overwhelming that I kind of knew from the house and dance music on TV. I just knew I wanted to be a part of it.
The more I learned about the Guv'nor, the more I came to appreciate his creative impulses and philosophy: listen widely, bring in every influence, even the darkest music can have fun and joy and humour in it, failure is as productive as success (and sometimes more interesting). This weird and wonky Boiler Room set is the perfect evocation of that: two mates goofing around trying to play the craziest music from their collections, discovering new territory on the way.
I never met him or saw him DJ (he played at the pub my friend books for, last year, but I couldn't go) but he was a massive influence and I'm so sad that he's gone.

I kept seeing his name pop up all over my electronic lists but never heard of himThe chances are you heard one of his productions or remixes and just didn't realise: Primal Scream, Happy Mondays, Simply Red, The Orb, My Bloody Valentine, Fuck Buttons, New Order, Björk, FSOL, Underworld, Chemical Brothers, plus the work on Junior Boy's Own/Boys Own Recordings and Rotters Golf Club imprints. The Quietus has good overviews

BBC Radio 6 are just finishing their 2-hour tribute show. Classic mixes, collaborations, and a few originals, along with tributes from musos who've worked with him. Worth a listen: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000fnys

BBC Radio 1 re-ran Weatherall's 1993 Essential Mix (Mixcloud copy of original airing), the third (!!) essential mix, ever. He came back for another stellar mix in 1996 (Mixcloud).
But that's just the tip of the iceberg: fans have collected over 900 hours of mixes (Mixmag) -- 42 years of mixes, sorted by year on the Weatherdrive, a Google Drive-hosted collection.
