A trailer for the upcoming video game Star Renegades.

It features an extremely well directed anime short story which seems to introduce the world of the game.

I was all "ooh, a game that renders in Anime!" and then, no. Pixel art. Kind of like Bega's Battle.

The game does look cool, but for a game trailer it was really misleading.

I feel like there needs to a rule: if you can't produce an actual gameplay video, you can't post a game trailer.

"Mild blood."

I am a diffident O negative, myself.

Here's a 2 minute video demonstrating some of the gameplay.

the combat demo looks interesting, but I wonder how frequently you have to engage with it deeply. There's a lot to be said for jrpg combat that is mostly brainless on occasion: Bravely Default and FFXII did a great job of letting you effectively autopilot (or just completely remove) combat between big hairy boss fights.

Yeah I thought the animation was the game graphics also.

Is there some retro/nostalgia reason for the graphics looking so much like an old Sega 16 bit game? Surely it could look much more advanced.

Almost certainly it's for nostalgia. There are a ton of games, both indie and from big houses, going this way lately. Hyper Light Drifter was phenomenally successful. But I think it's also interesting when games don't rely on the latest cutting-edge tech. Thomas Was Alone tells a great story using only rectangles.

Actually it kinda looks more like an evolution of Octopath, which was a bit less brainless by ... default.
