Certain artists are highly productive and constrain themselves to a particular style and format for their entire careers. Charles Shulz, the creator and artist of the Peanuts comic strip, produced thousands of comics over 50 years. As a result, he is one of the few artists who have enough ‘content’ to train a styleGAN2 model. By extracting each frame from nearly 18,000 comic strips I was able to harvest 63,800 distinct images featuring Charlie, Snoopy, Peppermint Patty and the rest of the gang – plenty of food for the network to chew on. Several hundred hours of computational time later, a network containing the ‘visual DNA’ of Peanuts emerged.

SANT

(literally every single one of the comics I've generated thus far, over a dozen, features SANT)

Schulz ran out of ideas after 1972 and just repeated himself after that, so perhaps this wasn’t too hard to pull off.

A lot of this is just cribbed from the 1972 TV special "Don't Eat the Brown Acid, Charlie Brown!"

Shulz' The Thing.

Watching a simulacrum of Snoopy morph into a simulacrum of Charlie Brown via Linus is really fucking me up. It's all just so perfectly adjacent to normal.

An Unknown Alien Being acquires a child's forgotten book and mistakenly believes that it depicts proper protocol for interaction with the human world.

The book is a collection of Peanuts comics.

It knows depression better than it knows friendship.

Kind of looks like a mock-Flemish translation of a Peanuts strip.

It looks to me just like a perfect example of how you can train a neural network to do nearly anything - incredibly poorly.

Let me know when they get a neural network that can create something funny.

I never quite understand how these things work. Is there a "machine learning 101" somewhere out there?

If you fed this thing, say, a panel of "For Better or For Worse," could it redraw it in Schulz's style?

That certainly never stopped Charles Schulz. Or Jim Davis.
