سرقة السيارات الكبرى

Egyptian graphic designer Ibrahim Hamdi has taken a bunch of famous and iconic gaming logos and translated them, keeping their overall design but switching out English (or...whatever is left of the language after everything's been miscapitalised and underscored) with Arabic. The cool thing here, of course, is that he hasn’t simply translated them (or, to be more accurate, transliterated them), but recreated them seamlessly within the design principles of the original Western logo, then dropped that logo onto the box art. You can check the whole project out at Hamdi’s Behance page. [Warning: loud autoplay music on his website.] [via: Kotaku]

These are in fact, great. With everything digital I am surprised that I just switch out the art work card for my games.

The title of this post seems to be “big automatic alarm system” I think the correct translation is probably something سرقة السيارات الكبرى

The graphic designer has transliterated it. جراند

These are great! My favorite is the Horizon Zero Dawn one because it manages to capture the weird futuristic script the designers made up for the English logo, down to the odd extra lines that don't really belong but seem to make visual sense. I don't read Arabic but it sure looks like the same design language. Cyberpunk 2077 is fun for the same reason.

Is there an easy way to swap these images out in Steam?

Vaguely related: Rami Ismail's 2015 XOXO talk about Arabic used (badly) as decoration in video games. Here's his tweets about Hamdi's project. He notes these are mostly phonetic transcriptions, not word translations.
I -love- that most non-Arabic-reading folks love the Cyberpunk/Horizon ones for how beautiful they are, and most Arabic-reading folks seem to love the DOOM one for how clever it is. It's such a notable split in opinion and it's so cool.

Boy howdy, these are great. I like them better than the originals. And wow, there are a lot of games I haven't played... which may not be a bad thing, I suppose. Anyway, thanks for this!

Can someone explain what makes the Doom one 'clever', for us non-Arabic reading/speaking peoples?

Well, it amuses me because it's spelled like "doooom" instead of "doom".

I used google translate, was trying to find the transliteration of Grand Theft Auto, but was struggling. Thank you for the correction.

I once bought a gorgeous t-shirt from a street vendor in southern Spain, filled with beautiful Arabic script and iconography.

Which I never wore, because I felt like such a shameless cultural appropriator when I put it on.

(Also, I bought it in late August 2001, so not long after there were other things making it a bit awkward to wear around...)

So this is totally small and selfish of me, but I love that it no longer seems weird to appreciate the sheer beauty of this script.

So, Rami Ismail's talk in the micro.

*I've asked to have title updated with the correct transliteration جراند as interogative mood commented up above. Apologies for the lazy research and posting.

big automatic alarm system

Well, it’s a good username in any language or script.

Mod note: Swapped out the title text per interrogative mood's gloss.

The Horizon Zero Dawn one really made me think about how much "alien" script is designed by stealing fragments of letterforms from non-Latin writing systems.

Because Islam discourages figurative art, a lot of mosques and other beautiful works of Muslim art incorporate words and stuff into their mosaics and designs. It is truly art, and it is truly beautiful, and I don't think it's bad to feel that way about it.

I have no knowledge of Arabic, but the Doom one is still the coolest because the font works so well

This is awesome! I love seeing the side-by-side comparisons and how he incorporated all the stylistic elements of the English logos.
