Do you like shoegaze? Powerpop? Alt rock? Would you list Pavement or Julianna Hatfield among your favorite artists? Do you frequently find yourself staring wistfully out of windows while listening to the Pete & Pete soundtrack wondering where that Blake Babies sound went? Do you miss the 90s? Do you wonder what the 90s is like now, in 2020? It's been a while but Beabadoobee is here to assure you the wait was worth it.

Beabadoobee is a British Filipina guitar musician who's been putting out some of the best music of the past few years. She is very good!

She says she's only been playing guitar for a few years and oh my god does that make me feel so unaccomplished but also terribly excited for the incredible avant garde artist she is clearly destined to become.

All the kids (I am an old kid, therefore an expert) seem to think she's capturing the sound of the 00s but that's wrong. Obviously that is wrong. She sounds like someone put a bunch of episodes of 120 Minutes into a blender along with a pinch of sugar and sometimes a tab of acid. Like hyperspace Julianna Hatfield. Like Blake Babies but more.

Listen to all of her songs, seriously, there is not a single bad one.

She also recorded a cover of Don't You Forget About Me which is '80stastic, better than the original IMNSHO.
Great post!

Damn, that's really good!

Here's a stellar review from the NME of her upcoming full length. As an also-old, who got through college in the early-mid 90's on a diet of Juliana Hatfield and Velocity Girl, I am really happy to hear this sound coming back strong.

I was planning to see her at SXSW this year before it got cancelled. That was a real bummer.

But, yeah, the dream of the 90s is back in full force! Beabadoobie, Soccer Mommy, Alvvays, Courtney Barnett... all amazing.

And don't forget Aye Nako!

Huh, that pete+pete soundtrack has a lot I wouldn't have expected... Heavy on the Magnetic Fields and like every Stephin Merritt side project (both the 6ths and the Gothic Archies!). The age-old answer to 'how do I put more magnetic fields on this mix tape without seeming like I ONLY listen to the magnetic fields?'

(for want of nothing, here's my favorite from the 50 song memoir: 'No'.)

Not that long ago NYTimes had a story on the resurgence of guitar sales since the pandemic began. Fender reported their best sales EVER, Gibson said something similar. And almost half of the new users were female. It used to be about a third.

When I go to the Fender Play community on Facebook I see half the posts are from women of all ages. There's going to be a revolution brewing because in a few years these folks will start coming out of their homes and blowing the roof off in venues.

This is really excellent! I'm so excited by the 90s guitar sound coming back.

If you like that fuzzy shoegazey-pop sound, check out Pronoun.

I am genuinely not sure if that comment was directed to me, but, umm.....

The thread title is a direct quote from the Asia Rising session. :)

Also, pronoun rules and I can't get over how good her mixes are. It's really rare to find quality mixes on Spotify, but hers are just mindblowingly fantastic. A parade of fresh, incredible artists. If ya'll want more music like this, definitely have a listen to that. I loved pronoun's Audiotree session from a few years ago, too - I think I put "A Million Other Things" on every mix I made for months.

Shoegaze is my (toe?)jam and Beabadoobee never disappoints. Worth mentioning that she did eventually get around to meeting Stephen Malkmus.

Lonnrot - your link to a mix doesn't go anywhere.

Loving Beabadoobee though - anyone with more recommendations?

That pronoun audiotree session is awesome. One of the comments says they sound like new order in 1983, which is spot-on. (And high praise; I've listened to those early new order albums until the CDs wore through.)

Couple more recs people might enjoy:
Snail Mail - pristine

black belt eagle scout - soft stud (saw them open for tacocat a couple years ago and was blown away.)

(oh, and speaking of tacocat, their side project Childbirth is awesome and hilarious.)
