I’m just coasting

Max Benwell interviews Nathan Apodaca (@420Doggface208) on his viral TikTok video longboarding to Fleetwood Mac’s Dreams while sipping cranberry juice (The Guardian). “It was just a regular day. [My car breaking down] happened to me almost every other day. So that’s why it was so easy for me to get my board, get my juice and just take off. Stuff happens. Let’s just figure it out. And everything worked in line: the song, the scenery, everything just came in line, it was perfect."

I really want to know, are there 207 other 420Doggfaces? Also what a nice video.:)

The family cranberry farm is a supplier for Ocean Spray, so they got a big kick out of this - and out of the Ocean Spray CEO giving Apodaca a new truck and a years' worth of Cran-Raspberry.

Ocean Spray won the lottery with this guy. They could have spent $100 million at the slickest ad firm on the planet and not come anywhere close to the level of brand engagement they got from Apodaca's (fabulous) video.

208 was, until recently, Idaho's sole area code.

Here's his interview in Indian Country Today, by Aliyah Chavez.

Got a slight chill at the notion that there are secretly 207 other Idahos out there, lurking.

"This is Covid-19, not Covid-1, folks. You would think that people charged with the World Health Organization facts and figures would be on top of that."

Sometimes numbers are not counting things.

The part of this whole story that really fascinates me is that this one video caused Dreams to re-enter the music charts. I'm sure that's because streams are now counted (in some arcane way) as part of the charts, but that's actually pretty cool. We could use some more old songs becoming popular again, IMO.

Admittedly hippybear this tik-tok did remind me that Dreams is a good song that exists and so I put it on one of my currently rotating playlists on spotify.

But as for the gentleman 420doggface208 I'm very happy to see that he got rewarded for his good taste, good vibes, and good content. 10k on gofundme and a new truck from Ocean Spray, the article says. For a lot of viral content creators, rewards are small even if the reach and influence is wide. Happy that it went differently this time!

hippybear - Chris Molanphy at Slate does a great job breaking down just how streaming affects the charts, if you want to learn more.

I'm surprised to discover the video was shot in the morning, because it has such strong "comin' home from work, feelin' free" vibes to me. That he can channel that kind of feeling while on the way TO work after his car broke down is amazing.

He got to talk to Mick Fleetwood! From everything I've read of Nathan Apodaca so far, it seems like all this couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.

Same! It's absolutely "ahhhh, done with work for the day, heading home."

From that Indian Country Today interview:
Public figures including musicians, actors and influencers have shared Apodaca’s latest viral video.
These public figures include Mick Fleetwood, Stevie Nicks, Jimmy Fallon, and Shakira.
When asked which figure has meant the most to him, Apodaca said Bizzy Bone, a rapper with Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, as well as Jay and Silent Bob.

Good story. When I first saw it I assumed that Ocean Spry bottle was about 20% vodka. But no?

It's about 20% cranberry juice.

0% cranberry juice. Ocean Spray cut with Vodka to make it drinkable.

I love this video, I love this guy, I love his other videos, and I love every single parody/homage. It's been a much-needed bright spot.

It’s funny I had assumed it was an area code but when I looked it up I thought - nah, that’s not an Idaho vibe. Sorry for the unfounded assumptions, Idaho!

I used to see usernames that were like superman6, or dude69, but it took me far too long to work out that username96 meant that they were born in 1996.

In one of life's little ironies I posted this comment newly landed in Idaho, where I typically spend about a week every couple years. I've subsequently tested positive for Covid and initiated a two week motel-bound quarantine, and have procured a 208 number all my own for the duration.
