Proof that Jenny Nicholson can keep me interested in pretty much anything for two hours, even a TV show I've never seen and had osmosed virtually nothing from.

The B plot of this for the last couple of weeks has been the ContentID hits that took down this video and her efforts to get it reinstated. I don't have any links to that that aren't just her twitter account and she didn't post about it as a thread or anything. But here's one.

After hearing about it for that long I did try to watch it, but the VD is just so awful I couldn't keep going.

If you've read the books it's much easier to start watching, but gets absolutely impossible to watch in later seasons.

I wish someone would make a TV show of The Hollows

Idk about y'all but I kind of want to watch China Beach?

I can't imagine wanting to watch the series if I've read the books.

Well, in my case, a few of them. Frankly, I only started because I was on a J.L. Smith kick because I was frustrated with waiting and waiting for the final Night World book to come out.

(Spoiler: It still hasn't. They even republished Night World in omnibuses, in prep for finally releasing the final book, and it STILL hasn't been published. NOT THAT I'M CRANKY OR ANYTHING.)

Man Jenny Nicholson, good on ya. That is commitment to a bit right there.

This video is two and a half hours long.

I tried watching anyway. At the start it's single person to camera with 100 jump cuts already in the first five minutes and I had to stop. I could probably watch two hours of an obsessive take down of terrible TV but the jump cuts are killing me. Does it start to flow better later?

Jump cuts are an unavoidable feature of YouTube commentary videos. You stop noticing them after a while.

I am am used to the slightly too many jump cuts typical in this sort of video, but this one just felt extra jumpy to me. Maybe it's because I am not previously invested in this person or this show that they jump out at me so much.

I read so much paranormal garbage (with love) but I haven't read this series, and then I started reading this wikipedia summary and every single element is so incredibly on the paranormal nose that I started to wonder if this series is satirical especially with the tomato apocalypse (??!!?) and I was super-excited for that but it looks like it's serious despite including every single trope ever and their cousins so I am definitely a little disappointed but also will definitely read the first book in the series.

My wife and I watched TVD until Elena's MEGANAP or so and while we watched/listened to this video today, we were surprised by the number of characters we did not remember existing. RIP, Chinny McWolf, Swole Jeremy, and Lamezo.

Before we started watching, I said "I hope she talks about the crow."

Man, I loved that guy.

I'm only an hour through so far, but I quit watching the show originally because Klaus was so fucking awful and never would be killed off, and she hardly rags on him at all. Disappoint.

I did enjoy her commentary on how super easy it is to become a vampire and run around in daylight and all that shit, though. Also, feeling bad for the original author.

I had barely shouted out "just like Mr Feeney" when Jenny mentioned Mr. Feeny. Ditto the "somebody switched this to evil" reference. Jenny is awesome.

I stumbled across her a few months ago (it feels like yesterday and a year ago at once) and her backlog of pop culture nonsense, dry smashcut sarcasm and unironic enthusiasm has had a big part in my tenuous grasp on sanity this winter. I am psyched about this video and super glad that she says in the beginning that it is intended for people who never watched the show. Watching her talk about things I have no real preexisting knowledge of is great.

Does she address the “Elena meganap because the consequences of RL breakups are messy” issue?

the jump cuts are killing me

You don't have to keep your eyes on the screen the whole time. You can more or less treat it like a podcast, usually it's just Jenny talking to the camera with some themed stuff in the background. I usually find myself curled up on the couch playing with a cat.

She's a good storyteller, and at least for me it's relaxing to space out while listening to someone dork out in depth on some fandom or subculture I don't know about.

Yep, she starts talking about this about an hour and forty minutes in, but maybe doesn’t address it with the level of drama the fandom attributed to it at the time. (That is conjecture, I was only very lightly aware of the fandom at the time.)

I liked it, despite being 200% not the target audience of the show and never having watched it (not because I don't like paranormal romance; because I don't like teen drama, even when the teens are played by actors who are pushing 40). I've watched her Land Before Time and MLP content before, so I know from past experience that she could review a phonebook and make it interesting. I did watch at 1.5x speed, though, because two hours!

I was particularly fascinated by the tangent about the books and the original writer's contractual misfortunes. A cautionary tale about contracts, and an interesting case to consider in moral rather than utilitarian arguments about copyright law surrounding derivative works.
