The Guardian website, 200 years ago.

On the occasion of its bicentenary, football cartoonist David Squires recalls The Manchester Guardian's online news portal as it appeared in 1821.

“... a fine periodical that would speak truth to power and remain forever unsullied by typos.”

Right there in the first frame. Hey, you gotta know thyself.

I particularly enjoyed, "In centuries from now, we'll be unable to function without constantly caressing our automatic masters."

"That's showbiz." Gold.

I was kind of disappointed that it wasn't actually the news of 1821 in an online format recognizable to the 2021 reader. It could be a neat cultural-historical translation activity, seeing what really was filling the headlines back then in a form that might be clicked, browsed, and doomscrolled today.

Also, I am fun at every party.

I'm surprised and pleased to see that the 200 year old web portal doesn't use Adobe Flash. Well done.

Not Flash, they wrote it in Cold Fusion.

I don’t feel like that story about Lord Willian Parsnips really got to the root of the matter.

Bless them for getting a dictionary within the last 200 years. #subscriber

And worth filing away for a pub quiz: “Taken up, black Newfoundland bitch” was the headline of the paper’s first article.

I really wish there was an equivalent to Squires's comic but for topical news. I just like the idea of a Beano/Buster style cartoon doing a daft and whimsical take on the news.

I'm pretty sure Lord Parsnips' choice of weapons there would have meant that BOTH parties had ceremonial toasting forks. I mean, otherwise the whole thing would make no sense!
