Have the Apple Switch ad parodies gone from clever to annoying? Ben Brown just made it so that I have to go wash my iBook. What is it with smarty-pants ex-dot-com art/lit/whatever majors trying to be lowbrow and disgusting? It never works. ( Found it via Drew )

Weird. Ben's (and Ani's) parodies were really the only ones I found remotely humorous.

I thought Ben's was hilarious. I was dying laughing and covering my monitor at work with my hand when I realized what was going on. Ani Moller's is quite humorous(and clean), too. But I guess I find Stella really funny too. (Not safe for work, DO NOT watch it if you find Ben Brown, dildos, or a lot of swearing offensive)

moller rocks, it's just that smarmy dude trying to be chris farley that irks me.

ur, rstevens? cool.... that ben brown ad is frickin' hilarious, just for the last half.

Meh on the parody.

This post made me laugh tho, its the mefi equivalent of "I think this milk's gone bad, here you try!"

hee hee, i think he just reminded me too much of indie rock pete ... thereby activating my self-loathing powers.

hehe, i'm rather enjoying all of it. plus, happy for the publicity for apple--i haven't heard this much talk of the comps in years...

My favorite. (also clean.) It illustrates the reason I don't own a Mac.

Dood, what is a cutie like Moller doing with that idiot?!?!

I will never look at my iBook the same way..........:-(

It was like watching David Caruso's move to The Big Screen. They failed, simply, because they forgot to include the conservative time tested jokes (Specifically, knife-fighting monkey dwarfs; evil 'pirate' babies; ackbar's "trap!"; computer male/female ports for sex; in soviet russia microsoft pays you; administrator please hope me; book girl stoned schtick with weezer glasses; glue coins to ground; YOUR TOWN IS NEXT; shag-a-delic/yeah-baby-yeah/oh-behave; goat riding; goat love; goatse; got milk; richard simmons; "website product"; zoot suit; silent movie music over mundane video).

Oh wait a minute - many of those were included. The Funney!

Whoa...did Apple actually mean to take that bite out of itself?
posted by LinusMines at 10:10 PM on August 14, 2002

That explains what happened to the Apple logo! When you're that baked before your video shoot, you need a little something to eat. Anyway, if you have a fast enough connection, you get a very large Quicktime window with an image that's at a high enough resolution for you to actually see how bloodshot her eyes are.

Oh, what I wouldn't give for a night with Ellen!

It's weird how people bother to discuss some thing I did and put on the internet. I'm not inventing neat stuff, I'm not making movies or music, but people still manage to comment on Metafilter. Not that I mind or anything, seeing as most of the comments I've had have been good. But gee, posting that Ben's sucked when he is a member of this board is an outright troll.

Also, clango, you also shouldn't slag off people who subscribe to your service. That's pretty shitty.

Oh, and the reason I'm married to Ben, is because he is bloody funny, even if you don't find his video particularly to your taste.

This is what's wrong with criticism on the Internet. Instead of saying, "Gee, I didn't find this amusing, I wouldn't recommend it," Mr. Clango and Mr. Drew make comments about me, my education, and my employment history. Do any of these things have a bearing on whether or not my parody is amusing?

No.

In the past few days, I've seen the words "ex-dot-comer" thrown around like the word "liberal" was by Republican presidential candidates a few years back. Since when was it a bad thing to have put your heart and soul into something you really cared about and believed in? Regardless of whether or not my company succeeded or failed, I'm rather proud that I took the chance on it at all.

Ben: Ah, you can get sweet revenge, and not be done for libel either.

Just post a link to any of 99.2% of Clango's comic strips and say they're totally unfunny.

In the past few minutes, I've seen the words "troll" and "parody" thrown around like the word "Inconceivable".

Are you sure you know what they mean?

Clango vs. Benbrown? Sounds like it's time for a good old-fashioned whatsbetter battle!

Everyone I've shown Ben & Ani's spoofs to thought they were hilarious. For those that don't get it...too bad.
posted by the biscuit man at 2:06 AM on August 15, 2002

Well, I haven't seen it posted here yet, but this one is easily my favorite "Switch" spoof ad. Don't worry, it's completely safe for work, and pretty hilarious as well.
posted by almostcool at 5:20 AM on August 15, 2002

Well, I thought it was funny, Ben, for whatever that's worth. And Ani's was good, too, except for the poor audio quality.

People are just jealous of your genius... or whatever.

The "parodies" linked here would be better if they were actually witty, but then the source material is so close to self-parody, any intentional parody would have to have to be extraordinarily subtle to make it work. Concepts as tired and obvious as "net pr0n" and "some of the ports are REALLY BIG" hardly fit that bill. Nice try, but, don't quit your day jobs, kids.
posted by JollyWanker at 5:48 AM on August 15, 2002

Now that's real criticism! My sentiments exactly, JollyWanker.

I really like the drunk gamers one, but perhaps only because I've been waiting for weeks now for my pre-order of soldier of fourtune 2 so I can finally play against my roommate. At least it's cross platform compatible...

The one thing I don't get about Ben's parody, is where is this "really big port"? I've been looking... I mean er.. what? nevermind.

What the hell is wrong with you? Ben and myself are two of the most creative people on the web today. Did *you* make a fake "Switch" video as a parody of the Apple commercial? I didn't think so. Are *you* New Zealand's top Internet Personality? I don't think so, either.

Making fun of Ben and I is like posting on a message board that Bush is a terrible president. Not only is it a bloody stupid thing to say, but Bush isn't going to step down just because you called him names. Likewise, Ben and I are bigger than you'll ever be, Drew. I don't see you selling T-shirts, tote bags, bucket hats, and mugs from your website.

I thought the switch ad was absolutely stupid, but ani, that is funny. *applause*
posted by Marquis at 6:48 AM on August 15, 2002

That is not a real e-mail. We've been through this once on Filepile. Drew made up a bunch of things like that and posted them to filepile for unknown reasons.

What I find really silly is the amount of time Drew has spent making up fake emails from Ani, posting them to his site, making reference to how he'd almost forgotten about the issue until he received the email...

I don't think anyone has thought about me this much since I wrote that thing about not liking web logs...

Getting back on topic -- Ellen Feiss sure is a hottie. Were I not married, I'd probably be a charter member of the Ellen Feiss fan club.

I like to get stoned and watch her ad over and over, pretending that we're sitting in the same gleaming, white, room, smoking the same delicious reefer.

Also, I have her as my desktop pattern at work. heh.
