He seems great. You can't win if you don't try, but...it's Arkansas. Good luck, Chris, you're gonna need it.

That's an impressive resume, certainly a high achiever. The kids are cute. Education and infrastructure are worthy aims. WHOA - he's running against Sarah Huckabee Sanders? Why didn't you say so? Got my vote.

Does he need to win a primary first or is he the candidate? Because that's a great ad.

My knowledge of Arkansas is limited -- I think the only thing I remember is that Bill Clinton was once governor there. But wouldn't any accomplished person of integrity have a fair chance over Sarah Huckabee Sanders, anywhere?

For fatbird:

Jones joins two other candidates, Supha Xayprasith-Mays and James Russell, who already announced their runs for the Democratic bid for governor. On the Republican side, Sanders and Arkansas Attorney General Leslie Rutledge will face off in the primary in May 2022.

The Republican governor, Asa Hutchinson, is term-limited. On the Republican side, two people have declared: Sarah Huckabee Sanders and the state's current AG, Leslie Rutledge. Sanders seems to have more institutional support behind her, and will be able to raise money nationwide in a way that Rutledge probably won't. Their politics are... not that different. I think it's likely that Sanders will run on her proximity to Trump and/or Jesus, while Rutledge will try to run on her record. Arkansas is a cheap place to do media buys, so I'm expecting a lot of that.

There are some other people that have announced they're running on the Democratic side, but, as you can tell from a video like that one, he has some people lining up behind him.

The last time Arkansas elected a Democratic governor was 1992, though the second congressional district (Little Rock and surrounding areas, including the mostly white White County but not the largely black Jefferson County, because gerrymandering) had a Democratic congressperson until 2010.

Chris Jones is a great candidate and a great person (who, full disclosure, I've met a few times--it's a small state), but I think he's looking at an uphill climb. Accomplished person of integrity Joe Biden lost the state by almost thirty points last year.

If you know anyone in Arkansas (or any other red state), urge them to register voters–Democratic and independent voters–in the time before the registration deadline next year. This is something everyone can do. Print the forms, put them in envelopes, carry them with you, and ask The Question: Are you registered to vote? Many people asked will be registered, which gives us a chance to explain the math. In my "red" state, if only 20% of Democrats found a couple of people each to register, we'd have rough parity with the GQP; if the independents did the same thing, we'd have a commanding lead. It's the same in most so-called red states. If the person isn't registered and takes the envelope, you've just made it possible for democracy in America to survive. The feeling one gets at that moment crushes despair.

Organizing is what allows the right wing in this country to punch above its weight class. We can do the same: organize and mobilize. Register voters, friends: democracy hangs in the balance.

The sacred fire of liberty is lit with a single, tiny spark. You be that spark: organize and register voters!

It's a fancy ad for sure, but how often do candidates with no prior experience in politics win state governorships? There's a pretty huge leap between rocket science and political science, as it were.

I like to think candidates can't win the primary without some credentials and connections, so best case scenario this is the opening of a negotiation for a cabinet seat? Or some kind of appointment by whoever does win the nomination (if successful in open election).

To clarify, the general election in Arkansas is next November, so 16 months away. The primary doesn't appear to have been scheduled yet.

More often than you think I'd suspect. Mitt Romney, for example.

The "lower" ranks of state government, especially in small states, are not especially prestigious. Working your way up from city council, to an assembly person representing 15k voters, to secretary of state, to governor is one approach. But so is being successful at something else and jumping to the top spot.

There's a pretty huge leap between rocket science and political science, as it were.

Yes, and I would not default to someone with no experience as a top choice based on a TV spot. I admit I had a viscerally negative reaction to all the Andrew Yang fans, for example.

In Jones' defense I will point out his Ph. D. is urban planning, not rocket science. And he's been involved in some political activities it seems, just not electorally.

Let's not forget that his maybe likely opponent doesn't have any actual elected experience either. Huckabee Sanders has been close to lots of questionable power and obviously has the name recognition but she doesn't really have any more experience.

Also while it would be my personal preference to have some experience and also a voting record to examine it's also a fact that a good number of these less powerful positions are currently still filled with mostly white males so at this point the requirement is just another delay on any actual change.

That was my first thought about his (pretty good, actually) ad, too. I hate being forced into the position of choosing between unknown and known-bad candidates but it looks like that's what this'll come down to, and I'd probably vote for him just out of fear of the alternative.

This is kind of theoretical, given that the election is far ahead in the future and there are so many unknowns. But, I feel that the Republican Party since the Southern Strategy has a tradition of departing from the truth, and also that there is thankfully a history of voters distancing themselves from the most radical departures, specially when the perpetrators were too obviously unlikable. Apart from her politics, Huckabee Sanders is a singularly not-charming person. I mean, that White House Correspondents caricature of her was gentle, and the reaction was clearly to what it could have been, not what it was.

To Teegeeack AV Club Secretary's thoughtful analysis, I will add that there's a lot of sexism in Arkansas, in politics, and in the United States, and a woman like SHS isn't going to have an easy time navigating it.

Also, Mike Beebe (previous 2-term D gov) and Asa Hutchinson (current 2-term R gov) are both very mainstream, lean-centrist, country-club/Rotary-Club/Chamber-of-Commerce-type politicians (that's not to say that Hutchinson won't cosign some really e.g. transphobic legislation, just that he'll first point out in an off-the-record private meeting that things like that are bad for bidness).

Mike Huckabee was not that kind of politician, and his daughter wouldn't be either. Arkansas is a fairly rural and fairly poor state, but we still have a cultural elite. They don't like being 48th or 49th in everything, and they don't like being embarrassed. SHS elected governor? That's embarrassing.

An overachieving black man who will in all likelihood be socially liberal and fiscally conservative? That's the kind of thing that helps persuade top-quality executive types to move to Bentonville, Arkansas.

To win the primary, Sanders has to bring in the sometimes-voters who went big for Trump. Is she that charismatic? To win the general, she has to bring in like college-educated suburban women. Can she navigate that kind of pivot?

I mean, maybe. While I don't think she's a particularly skilled cardplayer, she'll be playing with a stacked deck and other people's money.

I mean, that White House Correspondents caricature of her was gentle yt , and the reaction was clearly to what it could have been, not what it was.

The criticism of Huckabee Sanders at the WHCD was not over her appearance, it was that she is a liar. But the so-called "elite political press" couldn't address that criticism without admitting that they dutifully conveyed the words of a liar as if they were, or even could be, truth. So while of course the media amplified dishonest conservative talking points, this time they did so with an almost palpable sense of relief.

He's also worked as a public school teacher. From the FPP: His eclectic resume includes jobs as assistant dean at MIT, public school teacher and nonprofit director. Most recently, Chris Jones ran the Arkansas Regional Innovation Hub for the last three years.

From Daily Kos: Dr. Chris Jones, physicist, nuclear engineer, urban planner, and pastor, has launched his campaign to become the next governor of Arkansas with a powerful ad. He is the second Black man to do so in over 100 years; the first was businessman Josiah Homer Blount, in 1920, and another Black Democratic candidate, Anthony Bland, is formally announcing his run on Wednesday.

The Sentinel-Record: Anthony Bland, the 2018 Democratic Party candidate for lieutenant governor, will announce his candidacy for governor of Arkansas at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Webb Community Center, 127 Pleasant St.

2018 Arkansas Times article: Anthony Bland, who’d previously announced as a Democratic candidate for secretary of state, announced in a release today that he’ll run instead for lieutenant governor [...] This leaves Susan Inman, a former employee of the secretary of state’s office and a former director of Pulaski County elections, as the only announced Democratic candidate for secretary of state [...] Bland’s release said he was encouraged by the Democratic Party and friends and supporters to make the switch.

Bland
lost his bid (293,535 votes to Republican Tim Griffin's 570,433), and Inman lost her bid (323,644 votes to Republican John Thurston's 537,581). Hope the Ark. Democratic Party has updated its playbook for the next election.

Their politics are... not that different. I think it's likely that Sanders will run on her proximity to Trump and/or Jesus, while Rutledge will try to run on her record.

I’ll stand by most of my half-assed political analysis, but this bit doesn’t seem at all likely. They’re both going to run against trans kids, critical race theory, the next culture-war boogieman, and Nancy Pelosi/the Squad/BLM. This will be depressingly effective.

Chris Jones will win Pulaski County, where Little Rock is and where he lives now, Jefferson County, which includes his majority-black hometown of Pine Bluff, and a few of the sparsely-populated majority-black counties in the southeastern Delta part of the state. There will be some R-led election shenanigans.

If he’s real lucky, he’ll bring in one or two of the Northwest Arkansas counties (Walmart HQ) and maybe Faulkner or Craighead, which have liberal-leaning colleges surrounded by a lot of red. Maybe Saline County, too, which is rapidly becoming Little Rock exurbs.

Even with all of those, it probably won’t be enough to win the general, unless the R candidates manage to dirty each other up and turn off a bunch of moderates in the primary. Probably not even then (again, Trump 2020 won AR by almost 30 points). This won’t stop me from giving him money and telling myself we can win this thing, but I won’t be surprised when he outperforms expectations and still loses the election.

Perhaps Huckabee Sanders's habit of lying to the press (before she stopped performing her duties as press secretary, months before she actually left the position) will hamper her campaign efforts. (April 15, 2021 press release: Sarah Huckabee Sanders will report raising over $4.8 million in the two months since announcing her candidacy on January 25th – including more than $1.5 million from Arkansans – shattering the record for most money ever raised in a quarter by any campaign in state history. Hmmm, if true, it's a shattered record courtesy of out-of-town donations... )

On topic: Dr. Chris Jones has two Twitter accounts. There's a personal one, @cmjones99 ("7th Generation Arkansan | Educator | Entrepreneur | Organizer — “Low aim not failure is sin” Dr. Benjamin Mays" / chrisjonesar.com / Joined May 2009), where he's a big sports fan, and the campaign one, @JonesForAR ("Physicist. Minister. Morehouse, NASA & MIT alum. Educator. Non-profit leader. Dad & husband. Democrat running for Governor of Arkansas. #weARone #FaithInAR" / chrisforgovernor.com / Joined July 2017).

chrisjonesar.com is less glossy than the campaign site and v. charming -- it has clips of Dr. Jones on PBS! More in the media section.
