Oh this is rather nice. I find rain and thunder sounds profoundly soothing.

Plenty of rain in Rathfarnham lately. No need for apps.

Same here; it's forecast to rain every day this week. Neat app but mother nature global warming gives me enough rain.

why...why are there five seasons

Haven’t clicked on the link that has no description and might(?) go to something that auto plays sound yet, so this comment might or might not be relevant, but some regions do have five seasons. Eg. in New England and the Canadian Maritimes there’s summer, autumn, winter, mud season, and spring.

We don't seem to get rain in Chicago anymore. It's more like long stretches of drought interspersed with violent, heavy downpours. I don't even remember the last time we had a "rainy day" where it just gently rained for a long stretch—and I work outside and pay close attention to the weather.

I always feel more productive when it's raining. Sunny days are lazy and boring, but if nature is putting in the effort to do something interesting and fulfilling, I feel motivated to do the same.

why...why are there five seasons

The Aboriginal people of Australia have between three and six seasons depending on their country. Right now in the Yirrganydji region it's Kurraminya Yiwanyji (windy dry season). They have two main seasons and five sub-seasons. That first link has a drop down list that'll show you the different calenders around Australia, you'll begin to understand why these are far more useful and descriptive than the European ones. Saying it's summer in northern Queensland is completely meaningless.

If you type 'rain' into youtube's search the first hit is three hours of rain noises, and it has 130 million views. I'm guessing this is because of people like me who have tinnitus. I only really notice my tinnitus when there's silence, then it's my entire world, so you put on the white noise.

They get a bit niche, ten hours on a creaky wooden pirate ship in a thunderstorm is my jam.

btw never turn your headphones up louder than recommended. It's not worth it.

why...why are there five seasons

I was talking to a bloke from Borneo a long time ago who referred to "two-season countries" and "four-season countries". So, given that I live in a four-season country, and it rains in every season, and then add "rainy season" but not "dry season" from further North, and you get five.

...oh what? Canicule? What? I like my theory better.

The Aboriginal people of Australia have between three and six seasons depending on their country.

Oh I so wish we would learn from this stuff (cf: seasons starting on the first of the month... grrr wtf?).

We had one like last week in Chicago, where I am.

This is the first time I've heard about Canicule, but I can say without a doubt that the season just ended here (Southern New England). The air is different--slightly crisper and without the humidity of last week. Overall it feels very "September" now.

I always liked Kurt Vonnegut’s idea for six seasons (in the US):

May-June: Spring
July-August: Summer
September-October: Fall
November-December: Locking
January-February: Winter
March-April: Unlocking

See also MyNoise, which has a more complex and manipulable sound model if you want to fine tune things. Also many, many different kinds of soundscapes. As seen on Metafilter.

I like to think of myself as well read with a large vocabulary for obscure English words but canicule is a new one to me. Comes from the Latin word for Sirius, the dog star, the origin of our phrase "dog days of summer". I love when these strange associations come leaping across 2000 years of language and culture.

It's a doggy dog world.

What I really want to invent is some device I can install in my attic above my bedroom that mimics the sound of raindrops falling on the roof. The white noise generators are nice but it would be awesome to have a little more effect to it.

So does the link auto-play sound, or am I safe to click when I need to keep my phone quiet?
posted by eviemath at 8:09 AM on August 16, 2021 [1 favorite]

I love things like this. I started on them for sleep during a period when some inexplicable (to me at least) anxiety was keeping me from sleeping, and then started listening to them in the office for a time when random machinery noises from the floor above were making it hard to focus. Now I spend about half my time working to ambient background noises meant for people playing table top RPGs.

why...why are there five seasons

I live in a five-season climate, here in Arizona -- the period most of the States call summer is a bit longer here, and divided into dry summer and wet monsoon seasons.

Nothing plays until you click one of the seasons buttons. firefox blocks autoplay anyway, but even Edge didn't have a sound until I picked one to play.

~~~
I really like this Android "white noise generator" named "White Noise Baby Sleep Sounds"
It has 40 different sounds, and it's easy to pick a few and blend them at different sound levels.
I'm using "waterfall" and "boiling kettle" at half power and "jet cabin" at full. Then dial down the resulting mix to about 4 out of 10. This range of tones blocked low frequency and mid frequency highway noise at the hotel. Nice!
eviemath, no auto play, the link goes to a page where you can click various buttons to make the rain sounds play.
My calendar is five seasons of 73 days each: Early Spring, Spring, Summer, Late Summer and The Holidays. There's no Fall or Winter.
My mostly Midwest friends were saying last year how February is widely the worst month for those longing for spring, and I feel like in the PNW, it's mid August - mid September. You are ready for fall but instead it's the hottest, driest, most wildfirey month. You haven't seen rain since June. The grass and the hills are brown and crunchy. September 1 feels like it should feel a little fall-y but it's at least two more weeks. I am Wolverine, holding a picture of a rainy street.
I have to mildly disagree with the 5 seasons of New England above, as in my mind there are 6: summer, fall, sticks, winter, mud, spring.
Further to adept256's comment above, there are many First Nations peoples in Australia and there are many different calendars or ways of describing the seasons, which makes sense given how inter-connected they are with place, climate, flora and fauna. Here's an article about the seven seasons of the Kulin Nation here in Victoria.
Yeah it's really interesting how some mobs have a burning season when it's safe to clear the scrub, so the hot dry months aren't a total catastrophe. CSIRO and BoM have some collections of calendars I might make a post about later on.
