“Ladies And Gentlemen, …”

If you only have room in your life for one Twitter account where an SNL host announces the musical guest,
@CraigWeekend will have Daniel Craig welcome you to the best part of the week.
If you have space for another,
@snlhostsintro will give you a near endless supply of ten second time capsules in which a then-famous celebrity introduces a then-popular band.

I'd never actually seen the infamous Adrian Brody Rasta act... wow, it was so much worse than I could have imagined, made all the more so by his apparent 100% earnest commitment to the bit. Yikes.

A wee bit heartbreaking scrolling through the intros and seeing so many who have passed, especially those who went way too young (which is a pretty high percentage), and conversely, those horrible few who are, unfortunately and against all logic and decency, still wreaking their awfulness upon us (*obvious cough* a certain former president and a certain former NYC mayor, for example *obvious cough*).

My favorite part of this is in not following the account and just being gently amused whenever it shows up in my feed via retweets. I love these little internet fragments that exemplify innovation in comedy and entertainment in general. Duchamp would love it.

Some great juxtapositions there. If you recall paleo-SNL then of course you’d imagine Carlin introducing Janis Ian. Even if you did not see the episode, it just screams 1975 SNL. On the other hand, it seems like a high-end trivia question to cite when Pamela Anderson and Henry Rollins ever would have paths.

It seems right that Bernadette Peters would introduce the Go-Gos.

Nathan Lane introducing Metallica is a delight, and Malcolm McDowell introducing Captain Beefheart is just strange to think about.

The snlhostsintro account is a welcome addition to Twitter, I say as someone who has always gotten some weird frisson of excitement from the intros, even for artists I don't like. I'm surprised they didn't wait and keep the Adrien Brody in their pockets a little longer.

Also loving the account "celebrating" Mondays.

I can’t wait until they get to Christopher Lee introducing Meatloaf.

Dan Aykroyd introducing the Tragically Hip is the most Canadian thing I've ever seen.

Christine Baranski introducing The Cure is also surprisingly apt. At least back then, they had a U.S. fan base that consisted mostly of theatre kids.

I enjoyed when the official Bond account retweeted @CraigWeekend to remind people that their movie came out that weekend.

There was an NYT interview you don't otherwise need to read where it was revealed that Daniel Craig had been, to that moment, unaware of the twitter feed. (Link to the interview in that tweet, but no, you really don't need to read it and I'm not going to bother finding a non-paywall version).

"According to Garrett Morris, Walter Matthau was a huge opera fan and demanded that Morris be allowed to sing opera on the show.

In 2018, Jane Curtin named Walter Matthau as the worst guest host she ever experienced...">

No musical guest was scheduled for this episode. Instead, Garrett Morris sings "Dalla Sua Pace", an aria from the opera "Don Giovanni."

I can't find the piece but remember it live, absolutely head turning.

Maude (of Harold and...) was straight out of the movie. Unfortunate musical guest tho

Walter Matthau was a huge opera fan and demanded that Morris be allowed to sing opera on the show.

I've always wondered if the host has any input as to who the musical guest might be?

Obligatory John Mulaney

And for reference, the Patrick Stewart clip.

John Prine showing up in the Karen Black episode in season made me wonder about the Venn diagram of musicians who appeared on both SNL and Live From Here. Prine, and Paul Simon, and … that might be it? Did Lindsay Buckingham play SNL ever?

Oh my god, he showed up last weekend!

The thing I most remember about the Steve Forbes episode of SNL -- besides the incongruity of the musical guest being RAtM -- was the lazy and stupid yet (or thus) eminently memorable "Teve Torbes" sketch.

And for reference, the Patrick Stewart clip.

Related clip: Patrick Stewart talks about meeting Sting.

(So he probably had no idea who Salt 'N' Peppa were and just did the Shakespearean Actor's Enthusiastic Introduction. Which is fine.)

Also, Ackroyd was instrumental in getting the Hip the gig, AIUI.

He's on What Up With That a lot, but never gets a chance to say anything, except for one time...
