A Reuters photographer was the only journalist invited to the funeral of Xingu Chief Aritana of the Yawalapiti people whose death was a result of COVID-19.
In related news a Brazilian Senate Panel urges Pres. Bolsonaro be Charged with Crimes against Humanity for killing 150K by worsening Pandemic.
An earlier draft had called for Bolsonaro to be indicted for homicide and genocide as well, given how the ravages of the coronavirus have disproportionately hit Brazil’s Indigenous groups.
The Xingu river basin has had a rate of deforestation 40% higher than in the same period last year. Rolling Stone has called Bolsonaro the most dangerous climate denier in the world.

Jesus. I hope they can get rid of him soon. He's up for reelection in 2022. Maybe the opposition can at least unite if it goes to a runoff again instead of staying fragmented. As they have now seen the result of letting the far right win I have some hope they'll at least take the anyone but Bolsonaro position.

Given the seeming immunity to penalties the global right has acquired I have very little hope that Bolsonaro will ever be convicted of anything so the only real hope is to vote him out.

Thanks for posting this. I won't sleep much tonight, but it is still good to be more informed than less informed.

I want to remind everyone that the path to Bolsonaro was helped along by the Obama administration backing the impeachment and removal socialist Dilma Rousseff, replaced by Michel Temer. Within months of Temer taking power leaks were proving the entire thing had been orchestrated to stop Rousseff's administration from conducting corruption investigations into powerful capitalists, especially ones in positions of power in Brazil's government.

We really need to stop forgiving Democrats for this kind of shit. They are where they are today because our government legitimized a soft coup by treating the following governments with legitimacy. It's almost as if something is fundamentally fucking broken with how governments organize and do business amongst each other. Especially if obviously sham and con-men leaders continue to be given legitimacy, like Bolsonaro and Trump, instead of being treated with the absolute disdain they deserve.

Because this guy is one of the most dangerous people on the planet, and I can't stop thinking about how our government instead could have done the right thing and gotten involved when this fucking mattered. I swear we've invaded countries for less.

Washington Post: If Bolsonaro is potentially guilty of pandemic crimes, is Trump too? Sure, but would he ever be prosecuted for such? LOLNOPE.

Last week the Brazilian President lied to a live audience of 86,000 that Covid 19 vaccines cause AIDS. FB have finally pulled the video

I had an internet friend from Brazil who went all in for Bolsonaro. He's since turned on him (for corruption), but if it wasn't for Bolsonaro's tragic covid response, I figure he'd probably still vote for Bolsomort (if it was him against anybody from the PT).

BMJ (British Medical Journal) Takes aim:
The senators at the head of the commission intend to take the investigation to the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court. For the sake of ideology, hundreds of thousands of avoidable deaths occurred in a country endowed with one of the strongest healthcare systems in the developing world, and which should have been able to mount a robust response to the pandemic.

This case should be a lesson to other countries and for future pandemics. It is critical that we prevent other governments elsewhere in the world from letting pandemics follow their natural devastating course, under the excuse of protecting the economy and glorifying societal freedoms without protecting the most vulnerable people. For the future security of global health, the international community has a duty to acknowledge that this is a crime which, although inflicted on the people of Brazil, has targeted and threatened the whole of humanity.

Violence against Brazil's indigenous people rose last year.
There were 182 murders of indigenous people in 2020, compared to 113 murders in 2019, a 61% surge.
There were 263 reported land invasions, an "alarming" increase of 137% over incursions on indigenous territory the previous year.
The report blamed the government for failing to protect indigenous communities, while pushing legislation that would open their reservations to commercial mining, oil and gas exploration and the building of hydroelectric dams.
