Thank you for posting this! I stopped watching the video at about 1:34 because I breathed an "I WANT TO WATCH THIS MOVIE" longing that I haven't gotten from a trailer for a long long time, and decided I didn't want any more of it spoiled for me. Michelle Yeoh as an underestimated immigrant in the US who has to save everybody!?!!??! With amazing fight scenes!!!!?! YES!

Wow. This looks amazing.

(Also, an I mean this in the best way possible, this looks like if Michael Gondry directed The Matrix.)

I won't lie, the multiverse aspect made me worry for a minute that this was another Marvel movie.

Pleasantly pleased that it is not.

This is the first SF/Fantasy multiverse-ish movie trailer that I've been absolutely blown away by. Very excited to see this.

An original (not a remake or reboot) Sci-Fi story?
With heart and teh feelings?
With non-white lead actors?
With a female lead?
With a female lead who isn't super young?
Not Marvel / Disney?
With what appears to be high quality production values and special effects?

Count me in, this looks.... ahmazing!

ok, I am not going to watch this trailer! I will just skip directly to "watch this movie in which badass Michele Yeoh wears a googly third eye, hell yeah". thanks for helping me out with that!

Another interesting A24 production with the added bonus of the endlessly watchable and likeable Michelle Yeoh. Looks like a winner.

I AM SO EXCITE!

Does... does Michelle Yeoh at once point fight Jamie Lee Curtis?! Also, "I'm busy, I don't have time to help you [save the universe] today" is the most Asian mom line that ever mom-ed. These are my people.

For those not looking to watch and find out too much (why do trailers always show too much?), looks like it opens March 25.

Finally, another movie made by The Daniels. I'm not sure they can top Swiss Army Man, but I'm willing to let them try.

Please, Powers That Be, let the Apocalypse be delayed long enough for me to see this.

(In this timeline, anyway. In others, it’s already the Citizen Kane of that timeline.)

worry for a minute that this was another Marvel movie

This is an understandable worry, given that Marvel is very multiverse-preoccupied right at the moment. Beyond just being happy to see Michelle Yeoh in such an interesting looking project, I'm also glad that the multi-universe concept isn't being ceded to Disney altogether, because it's a fantastic concept, one that I think could turn out to be pretty important. Having Daniels be the ones to bring out the indy alternative is icing on the cake.

LMAOOOOO this is the art house version of The One (a trash western outing from Jet Li that's near and dear to my heart)

ok, I am not going to watch this trailer! I will just skip directly to "watch this movie in which badass Michele Yeoh wears a googly third eye, hell yeah".

If the pitch above appeals to anyone, please treat yourself to The Heroic Trio. It is ridiculous and utterly fabulous. Michelle Yeoh is the goddamn best, and has always been the goddamn best.

Spoiler: At one point a demon made of basically ground Spam grafts itself to Michelle Yeoh to take over her mad kung fu skills.

Star Trek: Discovery: Hey, here's a character from the Mirror Universe played by Michelle Yeoh! Pretty cool, huh?

I was gonna say, it would be fun if at least one of her is a nod to Captain and/or Emperor Georgiou!

It is just utterly fantastic that we've gone from "Okay, after ten movies in this genre staring young white guys named Chris maybe we can do the same thing but with a black guy or a woman," to "Here's a mind-blowing kick-ass concept for a movie that you've never seen before, an okay-take-my-money elevator pitch. Also it stars a 59-year-old Malaysian woman."

I was watching this, delighted as anyone would be, and then the character I believe is the protagonist's spouse(?) speaks and I thought, Could it be? I looked on IMDb and HOLY SHIT: that is Ke Huy Quan. That is the (obviously now all grown up) actor who gave us Data from Goonies and Short Round from Temple of Doom. My Gen X heart just exploded in joy.

A day may come when I sit back and say "No, I don't want to see Michelle Yeoh beat people up," BUT IT IS NOT THIS DAY!

this is the art house version of The One

...which has one of Ebert's best reviews. To wit:

"If Yulaw kills 123 selves, he has the power of 124. Follow this logic far enough, and retirement homes would be filled with elderly geezers who have outlived their others and now have the strength of 124, meaning they can bend canes with their bare hands and produce mighty bowel movements with scornful ease."

My powerful interest in this is tempered only by the sad knowledge that I live in a city where if it’s not a buddy comedy, a superhero flick, or a Nicholas Sparks adaptation, it’s not going to play on the big screen.
posted by ricochet biscuit at 3:27 PM on December 14, 2021

It'll play here on one screen for one week and then be gone.

Indeed, mrgoldenbrown. I paused there by happenstance and was intrigued. I assume the trophies are an Easter egg, but only time will tell.

High concept films are like Evelyns, there's thousands of 'em in the multiverse. Hopefully our universe is the one where this movie sticks the landing.

I watched this and partway through had a visceral rush of 'WHY CAN'T I PUT THIS IN MY EYEBALLS RIGHT NOW?!?!?!' It looks like something like a multiverse Sense8 meets, idunno, I think maybe the reference to Heroic Trio is on point. I am here for Michelle Yeoh kicking ass, particularly kicking ass as a middle aged woman.

Plus, all the googly eyes!
