His book is well worth reading, published around the turn of the century: The Measure of a Man: A Spiritual Autobiography.

Although the line, "They call me MISTER Tibbs." is probably his most famous (and it does help to see the whole scene to understand the power of that line), I'd like to give a special shout out to his role in the sublime "Sneakers", where he clocks a racist security guard and shouts back at him, "Motherfuckers mess with me, I'll split your head!"

A goddamn treasure, he was. RIP.

Back...a long time ago, when I was in college, I'd record quotes of his from "In The Heat of The Night" as my message on my answering machine (that would be from VHS to cassette). He was so great.

Loved him in many things! I especially like that he was one of the juvenile delinquents in "Blackboard Jungle," and not too many years later, he was the teacher dealing with juvenile delinquents in "To Sir With Love."

Lifelong fan. Just watched To Sir, with Love a few nights ago. Amazing body of work by an amazing person.

Listen, for all his great, grand, and groundbreaking work (for which he is rightly honored), he knew how to have some fun, too.

One of those movies I shouldn't have been able to see but was brought along to the theater because there was no available babysitter for 5-year old me in 1974 was Uptown Saturday Night. While I'm sad that the comedy trilogy of that picture, Let's Do It Again, and A Piece of the Action that he both directed and starred in is now tainted by association, those movies are how I first encountered Mr. Poitier, as the excellent straight man of a comedy duo. I saw the other, more serious and celebrated movies as a teen in the 80s, starting with The Defiant Ones.

Rest in power, Mr. Poitier.

The "slap heard round the world" (In The Heat Of The Night) was an act of courage, then and now.
