East to Eden "What follows here is a chapter from Roger [Deakin]’s Wildwood, to which I have written a short postscript essay that tells—by means of the story of a seed and a tree—how Roger continues to root and branch through my life and the lives of many others, long after his death" (introduction and postscript by Robert Macfarlane [previously])

"I AM TRAVELLING to Kazakhstan, propelled by a story told to me by Barrie Juniper that is something between the Book of Genesis and the Just So Stories: How the Apple Began. "

Thanks for posting this - I really enjoyed Deakin's books and was just listening to his wonderfully atmospheric 2004 short piece for the BBC "The House" again the other night.

That was utterly lovely.

I love Wildwood, and I have a clear memory of reading the beginning of that piece - but oddly, not the end.

I love Macfarlane's account of the tree, how it came to be, how it came to bloom.

It is remarkably and lovely, the ways in which we can go on connecting.

Thank you so much for posting this, dhruva. I am grateful for the opportunity to read it.

This post led me to discover that Deakin's son Rufus and his childhood friend Titus Rowlandson have written a book about Walnut Tree Farm, the Elizabethan house that Deakin rebuilt from near-ruin, and which features prominently in his books.

Rowlandson and his partner Jasmin Moss are the current residents, and now rent some of the outbuildings that Deakin built through Airbnb. They've posted some great photos of the house and its surroundings on their Facebook.

Thanks for posting this! I had bookmarked it and only now got around to reading it, and it really is a wonderful pair of essays. I love everything I've read by Macfarlane, but this makes me want to read more of Deakin's work as well.
