Started Out As A Fish. How Did It End Up Like This? (NYT; archive.ph link). A meme about the transitional fossil Tiktaalik argues that although we did emerge from the sea, we aren’t doing just fine.

I have a soft spot for memes and tweets with this kind of view. (“WE WERE LITERALLY BORN ONTO A PLANET THAT GROWS FOOD HOW DID WE FUCK UP SO BAD THAT I GOT A CREDIT SCORE”) Sure it’s depressing, but it also shows that some young people are willing to reimagine the world.

The oldest statement of the view I can think of is of course Douglas Adams: “Many were increasingly of the opinion that they’d all made a big mistake in coming down from the trees in the first place. And some said that even the trees had been a bad move, and that no one should ever have left the oceans.”
