Cat reference in the first answer is obviously a sly nod to MeFites.

This is quite helpful -- it took me forever to get Jessamyn West, Jesmyn Ward and N K Jemisin disambiguated in my mind.

This is wonderful.

And I must say that even the errors in the auto-generated transcript are delightful. When Jessamyn is talking about collecting mosses, it comes out, "I need an offline hobby and my offline hobby is building mass terrariums a lot of times. So I’ll go out in the woods and get moths and come back here and stick it in a jar." - which is easy to correct in your head and also fun to imagine. Mass terrariums! with moths!

I'm so glad this exists, and SO glad there's a transcript. Thank you so much for posting this, a non mouse, a cow herd!

Mass terrariums! with moths!

I'm imagining a 1 kg standard mass covered in bits of moss with resting moths.

I emphatically agree with her about people struggling with tech and not being able to get help with basic computer literacy or atypical tasks. That's something I've spent much of my own professional life trying to do. There are far too few of us computer-knowledgeable folks who are willing (and able; as she says it's not a strength all techies have) to work with inexperienced people on those sorts of issues.

I’m pretty sure “Mass terrariums” are terrariums from Jessamyn’s home state of Massachusetts.

Wait does Jessamyn own Metafilter now?

I dunno, "Mass Terrariums" is mighty close to what The Music Man says right before "The idle brain is the devil's playground!" in Trouble!

My Firefox refuses to download the audio file, saying "the certificate is likely expired". And my podcast player Overcast says "download failed". I guess I'll check again tomorrow.

I'm very glad that Jessamyn is the new owner.

(And I--as a casual user--was always happy with Mathowie and Cortex.)

I reckon this is as good a place as any to ask whether The Soul of a New Machine (which features Jessamyn's dad) is a good read in 2022. I've been using computers since 1978, including VAXs for a number of years.

re: certificate

First try gave me same error. Tried again after reading thread and audio loaded without error.

I try to channel jessamyn when I am working with older relatives on technology. My gf tries to get her 85 yo father to do complicated things on his phone, syncing between devices, casting, etc. He gets really frustrated with her. "I just want to watch this baseball game". I try to be gentle with gf when telling her to stop with the apps and whatnot. I just typed out some step by step directions on how to use his MLB app on his smart TV. 6 steps. From Turn On the TV to open a beer. He now calls me with questions and begs me not to tell gf, his daughter, that he went around her.

He has a pair of really nice BOSE headphones that he just wants to turn on and be attached to his TV so he can watch in bed without disturbing his wife. He is near deaf and listens loudly. GF had him download the Bose app, set it up to attach to both his tv and his ipad. Problem is when his ipad is in the room with the tv and was already connected to the headphones, he struggles with getting the tv to connect. The headphones can accept two connections at once, but it is not without bugs. He did not ask for the iPad to be hooked up. I finally just removed his Bose app, removed the iPad and set it up to only connect to the TV. Now, all he has to remember to do is charge the things and turn them on.

jessamyn is right. Sometimes the answer is no or rather you cannot do this, but you could pay someone to do it for you. jessamyn's ability to teach, her ability to wield a velvet hammer, her patience and her appreciation for the end user's frustration as well as point of view is something I admire.
