A week ago veteran journalist Dom Phillips and Indigenous Peoples expert Bruno Pereira went missing, now presumed executed in the far west of the Brazilian Amazon.
The two men had previously visted the Javari Valley in 2018 with photographer Gary Carlton.
Andrew Fishman posts a draft version of Dom's selection of his favorite reporting.

Translated BBC interview with Dom's wife Alessandra Sampaio.
"Dom understood the complexity of the Amazon and did not see prospectors simply as villains......The problem is not exactly who is there destroying it, but who is providing all these structures for this destruction to happen. He said that there was no point in ending the mining without offering any option". (Original Portuguese)

I hope the worst case scenario isn’t true, and they are just temporarily off course. They are heroes working for the good of us all.

Tom Phillips, Guardian South America correspondent and a friend of Dom reporting from Base Evu on the Itaquaí River. This must be heartbreaking for him.
A whirlwind of sadness’: search for pair missing in Brazil goes on even as hope evaporates.
On Sunday, rescue workers announced they had found a backpack, a laptop and a pair of sandals near the riverside home of Amarildo da Costa de Oliveira, the fisherman police have in custody and are investigating over the disappearances.

Dom Phillips and Bruno Pereira: ' a tragedy foretold'
There is now uncertainty as to what exactly has or has not been found. A Brazilian Embassy official contacted Dom's family in UK to say two bodies had been found tied to a tree, leading them to believe it was the missing men . A little later Policia Federal issued a statement saying no bodies had been found. It is now suspected among many that the authorities under the direction of the Military and the far right Bolsonaro are deliberately muddying the waters. There are some very astute journalists on the case and the general consensus is that the only truths are those being told by the indigenous searchers. Already there are serious questions arising. How come the impoverised fisherman who was first arrested and beaten up by the police had as his lawyer the chief prosecuter of the area who later stepped down? There is also talk that the illegal fishing operations, mainly for the giant partially protected Pirarucu which can come in at up to 200 kg. is controlled from neighbouring Peru.

Well the word is in, the murderer confessed and took authorities to the bodies. It is about international poaching of those huge fish from a protected area. This reportage is from The Guardian, in case you want to know where I got my info.

This is a picture of the huge fishes poachers are after.
