From the article:

Look, I cut them some slack when Gabriel left, but now that Hackett’s gone and they’re down to a trio, it’s like they’ve completely abandoned their prog-rock roots. If I wanted cute pop music I’d put on some Bangles.

someday someone (it may even be me) will finally write this novel. Because there is a Steve Hackett shaped hole in the history of what has come to be known as Prog Rock.

Is this where I admit that back in 1986, "Turn It On Again" would have been my get-out-of-Vecna ticket?

*the Overture to 2112 by Rush starts playing*

I first read "the 1812 Overture starts playing" and the cannons could be easily synched with the dropping stones. Pretty epic, but not quite 80's nostalgia.

God this fucking show. We're screaming at it constantly about how bad the pacing is, how inane the dialogue is, how much absolute garbage filler is in there. I'd like to watch Stranger Things 4 if the Duffers Weren't Paid by the Minute or whatever the excuse is for the lumbering, bloated self-devouring corpse this series has become.

The Bangle's first album is great.

“Turn It On Again” is at best Genesis' fifth-best single.

The use of "Running Up That Hill" in the show really illustrates how forward-looking and timeless this song, and Kate Bush's music in general, is. She's a lady who took control of her career early in life, built her own recording studio, and used a cutting-edge Fairlight synth (a $40K keyboard back then!) to create instruments no one had ever heard before. Look at the other songs from that time: Say You, Say Me; We Built This City; The Power of Love; Can't Fight This Feeling; Careless Whisper. All competent songs, and all songs that I can't turn the radio off fast enough when they come on. I bought the pink-marbled vinyl release of the Hounds of Love album from the local head shop as soon as it was released, so I'm quite biased, but I feel like everyone else catching up to me over thirty years later is some vindication!

how bad the pacing is, how inane the dialogue is, how much absolute garbage filler is in there

I wasn't bothered by the pacing. They used to say tv episodes were like short stories and movies were like novels, but I think the current 10-episode tv seasons, which are really mini-series, are more like novels. So I don't mind lots of side-exploration. The formula for writing teaser+four acts+epilogue type scripts could be stifling and overwhelm the story, so I'm glad to see that go bye.

Totally. Every time they dragged ass back to Russia for interminable dumbass man-in-a-hole timewasting I just left it playing and went and folded socks or something.

Ha, that song would have been ten years old already by the time Max needed it, and she would've been made fun of by any other Rush fans for not getting with their current releases.

On the other hand, she could have had "Mystic Rhythms" as a cassette single, or if the episode had been set one year later "Time Stand Still" would also have been appropriate.

When Siouxsie and the Banshees' "Spellbound" played over the closing credits of the finale, I wondered if maybe they had acquired the rights with the intention of having that be Max's favorite song—the lyrics seem much more connected to what Vecna is doing ("a beckoning voice", "laughter cracking through the walls", "a rag doll dance")—but then decided to go a different way.

I do think it was a misstep to have Max fleeing from Vecna through a storm of falling boulders on flat ground when she could have been...running up a hill? That's money left on the table.

For me, it would have to be "These Dreams" by Heart since that song is irrevocably tied to LotRs in my mind since I was reading it through for the first time while that song was ubiquitous.

I reckon I'd try either Metal Machine Music or 4'33" would be the way to go.

(Note that the linked performance of that latter Cage piece takes a languid six and a half minutes; if you are not a purist and are pressed for time and just want the crowd-pleasing high points that everyone knows, here it is at a condensed three minutes and change.)

During the latter half of Season 4 I was almost hoping Argyle would end up in Vecna's sights simply because I would have very much enjoyed seeing him flee through the mindscape to an echoey, ethereal rendition of "Pass the Dutchie".

All it needs is a TV show. That, and a radio.
