Thank you, I had thought so but wasn't certain.

I wasn't offended. Some days I might feel more like a them or an it, but I do prefer she. Mostly I'm just happy for the good news, here.

From the article:
Well, MetaFilter is I think Matt Haughey, who’s the guy who created it, had the best description of MetaFilter, which is a social network for non friends.
That is a really fascinating way to put it, from the perspective of someone who's made friends from the site, but yeah, we all start off as non-friends. And then some weird magic happens after we've typed at each other for a while.

I say that as someone who had a phone conversation with another Mefite today, mostly discussing us hanging out in a couple of weeks. It's somewhat strange to be reminded that the internet (and Metafilter) is just another third place, where people meet and develop friendships.

Yet it all just comes from sharing, listening, and typing on a screen. It's amazing!

Ethan Zuckerman:

So MetaFilter is now 22 years into this project. You’ve been part of it essentially all of that time. Let me ask a question that is perhaps complex and multilayered. Is MetaFilter sustainable?

Jessamyn West:

Oh, that’s it?

...

Jessamyn West:

I mean my answer in short is yes.

EXHALES

I haven't seen it that clearly expressed in a long time. I certainly haven't seen it be addressed as a shock to admin that that would still even be considered a concern.

Thanks, Jessamyn (and EVERYONE [mods, transition team, steering committee, and of course all the users!] for making this an awesome place. Look to see it stick around for a very long time, and love the stewardship that is in place.

... and speaking of longevity, I've been watching Treme, and in the episode "On Your Way Down" (which aired in 2011), there's this exchange, in which Delmond (jazz musician now living in New York) is complaining to his manager about his lack of internet presence:
Manager: You aren't gonna tell me that you expect the label to do co-op advertising in "the Boise bugle" or whatever it's called?
Delmond: Facebook.
Manager: Facebook?
Delmond: Yeah, MySpace, the Blogosphere, MetaFilter.
Manager: Meta-who? Delmond, come on.
(And now I'm curious where ELSE MetaFilter has gotten a shout-out.)

"one of the Internet’s longest lived and most beloved online communities," indeed.

Until this FPP, the new proprietor's surname simply hadn't stuck in my brain. I just saw Jessamyn as one name, like Cher or Sting.

West, Jessamyn West... To me, that name demands, nay, cries out for the presence of another MeFite with the handle... Artemis Gordon.

Jessamyn West implies to me that we need a Jeremy East, a Bob North, and an Alice South and there needs to be a mystery going on.

Reasonably Everything Happens: "Also, probably the wrong place to ask this, but what's with the 'no cabal' shirt?"

It's an in-joke. The joke is that there is no cabal, and you say there is no cabal, so it sounds like there's a cabal.

Here's a sort of list of everything on the seal.
