Why a Vanderpump Rules breakup is the Red Wedding of reality TV [Polygon] “The people who made these declarations were not talking about a breaking piece of political news. They’re talking about the breakup of Vanderpump Rules stars Tom Sandoval and Ariana Madix. I, personally, have been comparing it to Ned Stark’s death plus the Red Wedding plus the JFK assassination, since it is too big, too shocking, too life-altering to be compared to any single event. Vanderpump Rules is a spinoff of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills that set out to follow the lives of Lisa Vanderpump’s employees at her restaurant SUR (Sexy Unique Restaurant). Over the course of the show’s 10 seasons, SUR employees have gained fame and moved on from their jobs waitressing, hosting, and bartending, but not from the show. The magic of Vanderpump has always been that its core cast members were good friends for years before the show began. Their relationships were real, and so was the drama. And the latest Vanderpump scandal is the most shocking one yet.”

I too was confused - I thought there was something called a Vanderpump, probably some kind of shady financial instrument, and that it was some kind of heist/Wall Street movie.

These people are all in their late thirties. I assume that all this stuff is heavily scripted and basically just a way to make a living, but as the poet said, what a way to make a living.

I would be really, really interested in some long-form interviews with these people when they're retired. It seems like a whole new form of subjectivity, like you're a living fanfic. What is that like inside your head?

I have been vaguely aware of this thing that I feel much too old to know anything about for what feels like at least ten years. So presumably everyone involved in it is also too old to know anything about it at this point.

"Heavily scripted" is said so often about reality shows, and that's not so much the case--they are often lightly scripted, ie production asks you to rehash a conversation in a certain setting (two cast members meeting up for lunch: "so what happened last weekend on that trip?").

And yes a lot of the "drama" is manufactured, especially when the stakes are hilariously low (like "you betrayed me by attending this other friend's event!"). They did attend the event, they were probably mildly bothered by it, but might have been coached to lean into that upset feeling and make it a Thing.

But the broad strokes of life events are as real as they are for anyone else--public record confirms that marriages, divorces, property transfers, etc. etc. are all truly happening and aren't just played up for the show(s).

And in this case, the cheated-upon person was one of the most reasonable people to ever appear onscreen. Relatable, sensible, and good at communication. She's a gem! We love her! And the one doing the cheating was recently out of an abusive relationship and finding her footing being newly single, so we're rooting for her! A naive lady in the big city!

So it's unnerving when the naive lady has duplicitously been having a love affair with her sensible good friend's partner of a decade. And it calls a lot of other items into question (her dog's injury in a recent episode, for example, was shady in provenance and now appears to have been caused by Tom's dog during one of their secret meetups) (to let a dog get harmed in all of this is even more unconscionable than the rest, and it makes me dislike her even more).

But what is that like inside your head, knowing that you are living your "real" life with constant feedback from producers and social media and a financial incentive to make your life as exciting and on-brand as possible? It would be like playing a 24/7 game, but with the entire internet and there's no opt-out. That has got to do a number on your brain. Like, that is not even remotely how being a TV star worked even in 1990 - you could certainly play to your fans, you could certainly take direction from your producers, you could certainly escalate drama and create a personal brand, but it wasn't a total role, you still had a private life. And if you were a TV star, it wasn't unreasonable to expect to have mostly a private life until you were a household name across this great nation. And this goes on for ten years - it's not just a season of excitement and fuckedupedness on MTV that you write a memoir about in 2015 or something either.

It's like we've invented an entirely, radically new way of wiring the human brain, like we actualized some horrible version of an Iain Banks novel.

Katie warmed up to Raquel as well over the years, and in season 9 they both took and sold photos of their feet to help fund Raquel’s second nose job.

I use professional wrestling as the bar by which I judge how fake real things are (or, if you prefer, how real fake things are).

Reality television is more real than, say, Stranger Things but just a smidge less real than professional wrestling.

Thoughts I had reading this as someone who completely avoids this kind of reality television:

* The names "Schwartz and Sandy's" and "TomTom" are actually rather cute for two guys with the same first and similar last name, reminds me of "The Daniels."
* On the other hand, "Sexy Unique Restaurant" makes me want to gag?
* "both took and sold photos of their feet to help fund Raquel’s second nose job." REALLY makes me want to gag. This is exactly why I don't watch this ilk of "reality" TV.
* "it’s unbelievable that Sandoval dressed up as the woman he was having an affair with, went out with Ariana and Raquel that night while dressed as Raquel, and that Raquel posted several playful photos and videos of Sandoval in the costume — all of which are still available in her Halloween Instagram highlights." "........" I see subtlety is not anyone's strong suit here.
* "Schwartz & Sandy’s, which was being Yelp-bombed and having its Instagram page spammed with negative comments. " -this does not surprise me in the 2020's.

I dunno...I feel like I've read more entertaining drama than just cheating elsewhere this year, such as the Don't Worry Darling drama? I think I was expecting a lot worse than just cheating, honestly.

On a related note, I was totally baffled by this Vox post about eyebrow wars. We can't all keep up with all gossips. And now, oh, look, Vox has something on this one.

You know what I love about following British royal family drama? It doesn't smack of kayfabe. My impression of shows like this, Kardashians, etc. is that they all know exactly what they're supposed to be saying/doing/reacting, coming out with "I'm not here to make friends!" and snapping their fingers, or whatever trite reality TV lines are always said, hitting their marks, being "unscripted" (technically) but not really. (I note in the TV show Reboot, one former reality TV star actress literally showed someone else her script for the show.) Everything they do is deliberate drama in a "fake/real" sort of way. They follow the tropes list.

The BRF, on the other hand, are old school reality TV, literally, but are perennially super, super bad at their reality press wars, which makes it all the funnier/lulzier (or anger making) to watch. I'm no longer amused by most "reality" TV because it's so kayfabed I don't care, but the BRF make stupid decisions daily and publicly and I laugh and break out my popcorn. Lainey Gossip had a good take on this kind of thing recently as well.

Yeah, guys, good work, a), assuming I'm straight, b), going back to my FanFare comments from 2015 to find out that I watched Game of Thrones at the time when that was the biggest thing on television, c) assuming I've only ever heard of this show or these people five minutes ago, when the Real Housewives bullshit has been going on for years and basically been unavoidable to anyone who pays attention to media (or in my case, works in media). That'll show me!

Also, congratulation on this particular piece of reality TV not being as bad as the literal fascist propaganda of Fox News, I guess, but if you want to go down that route with your analysis, reality TV in general is closely tied to the recent rise of fascism in the US. Trump was made a household name by reality TV, Duck Dynasty featured a bunch of heavily armed right-wing extremists beamed into people's living rooms, Caitlyn Jenner decided to run for governor of California for the party who wants to exterminate people like her, probably assuming (maybe correctly) that her money would protect her and throwing regular trans women under the bus, Sarah Palin and her family has had multiple reality shows, and the list goes on. Here's a whole article about the reality TV to conservative politics and back again pipeline.

But I'm sure that when these people, whose claim to fame seems to be living in one of the most exclusive and expensive zip codes in the US, inevitably bumble into politics, they won't channel their fame into backing either California libertarian capitalism taken to extremes, or downright fascism. Everyone who is willing to participate and capitalize on fame through reality TV seems to be a malignant narcissist, and I can't actually think of any counterexamples, though they might exist.

So yes, this kind of trash is bad for society and bad for the tenor of the media, and bad for the audience's relationship with things like truth vs. fiction. I like my trashy media as much as anyone, but I've always been extremely uncomfortable with reality TV, its manipulation of the truth and the audience, and the blurring of fact and fiction that it represents.

If you’re a certain kind of Christian you believe God sees everything you do, and that, at its best your life is a sincere performance of righteousness which will be richly rewarded at the end — or at the end of days perhaps.

So the watched quality of these lives, and the enhancement it bestows on them doesn’t seem so unusual to me, but the fact that it’s indisputably real and not at all delusional, and circles back to become a palpable part of those lives is stunning. It’s The Hyper-real Housewives of Beverley Hills, where every moment is observed, recorded, and then feeds back on itself until the amplification of the loop threatens to blow out the fabric of space-time itself.

The synopsis makes it sound monstrous, but I'll take your word for it when you say it's actually good.

The only reality TV shows I watch and enjoy are more competition oriented ones, especially if the competitors are not amateurs. The latest reality show I watched and enjoyed was binging all the seasons of Making the Cut, which pretty much hits the sweet spot for me on the competition/competent people scale, although I could do with a little less drama. As for the fascism potential of that show, I feel like Tim Gunn is probably pretty safe, and Heidi Klum relatively so, although I don't expect them to be exactly class conscious. I'd prefer to just watch the participants design stuff, though.

No government or social system is so evil that its people must be considered as lacking in virtue. As Americans, we find communism profoundly repugnant as a negation of personal freedom and dignity. But we can still hail the Russian people for their many achievements--in science and space, in economic and industrial growth, in culture and in acts of courage.

Among the many traits the peoples of our two countries have in common, none is stronger than our mutual abhorrence of war. Almost unique among the major world powers, we have never been at war with each other. And no nation in the history of battle ever suffered more than the Soviet Union suffered in the course of the Second World War. At least 20 million lost their lives. Countless millions of homes and farms were burned or sacked. A third of the nation's territory, including nearly two thirds of its industrial base, was turned into a wasteland--a loss equivalent to the devastation of this country east of Chicago.

Tom's apology
posted by tiny frying pan at 6:29 AM on March 8, 2023

From Reddit breakdown of timeline:

Basic Event Timeline:

On Friday 3/3, this TMZ Article broke the news that Tom Sandoval and Ariana Madix have officially split due to allegations that he cheated with co-star and mutual friend, Raquel Leviss

Allegedly, on Wednesday 3/1, at a Tom Sandoval and The Most Extras concert, Ariana attended in support of Tom's new single(/cover?), where she discovered inappropriate texts/sexts and an inappropriate video of Raquel on Tom's phone that outted the affair. Concert-goer description of events

Scheana Shay and Raquel, at the same time on 3/1, were filming Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen post-Vanderpump Rules' new episode.

There are a couple of different versions of how things went down after the discovery. This is my general knowledge/consensus of what occurred, based on a few sources (will update if incorrect):

Upon finding the content, Ariana may have sent the video to Raquel, stating "You're dead to me," who was with Scheana at WWHL at the time

Ariana then called Scheana to inform her of what was going on. She may have called Raquel directly as well to get verbal confirmation?

Scheana confronted Raquel who then admitted the affair

Scheana either punched or got into a minor scrap with Raquel, leaving Raquel with either a black eye or busted eyebrow. A few sources have confirmed that the injury was not bad/that noticeable.

Ariana had taken her Twitter down Thursday 3/2, which was originally believed to be in relation to some fan reactions to the episode on 3/1. She then took down her Instagram on Friday 3/3, both of which are now recognized to be in relation to the affair being made public.

James Kennedy, Raquel Leviss' ex-fiance and fellow VPR cast-mate, shared a screenshot of the TMZ article on Friday 3/3 to his instagram feed, which has since been deleted, writing "I hope you all feel as sick as I do." In the comments, Jeremy Madix, Ariana's brother, commented calling out Tom and Raquel. This was considered one of the first official confirmations by the cast that the TMZ article was true.

Bravo/VPR production was apparently on stand-by for this ordeal. They have been filming the entire aftermath, and cast have begun to film scenes together and confessionals. TMZ confirms that crew were present at Sandoval and Ariana's home to film a discussion between them regarding the break up on Friday 3/3. James posted to his stories from the confessional set, as well as Scheana

Despite normally filming after the season has fully aired, it has been confirmed that the VPR reunion will begin filming in two weeks.

Tom Sandoval has been spotted going to Raquel's apartment.

Raquel says that the inappropriate video Ariana found on Sandoval's phone was recorded without her consent. Her legal team has allegedly contacted multiple VPR cast-mates, citing a revenge porn law in California and ordering them to delete the content if in possession.

Lala posted and deleted this instagram story, verifying that she was contacted by Raquel's lawyer. She slammed Raquel's lawyer for contacting her directly, rather than her own legal team.

Podcasts:

Radio Andy with Andy Cohen (summary) relevant points:

Andy said that according to his intel, Raquel and Tom are in fact still seeing each other.

He believes that because of what we have heard regarding the timeline that the two must have been sneaking around while at BravoCon

He felt that Scheana was suspicious once Raquel answered Sandoval as the hotter Tom on WWHL

Adam Newell's Podcast (summary) relevant points:

Tom and Raquel plan to be together, planned to eventually tell Ariana but due to series of events (home ownership, her mental health, family and dog death) it had yet to happen

VPR editors are altering some episodes now that they have more information about scenes that may be relevant given the situation unfolding

Scheana, Lala, and Kristen have all been recording content for their respective podcasts. None are currently released but those may give more insight into their perspectives and reactions, as well as where things stand now. They are expected to release sometime this week.

Cast Instagram Content:

Raquel first wearing the lightning bolt necklace . It can be seen in a few other posts along her Instagram, though she does not wear it all the time. She did wear it at BravoCon.

Raquel on Tom's shoulders for a concert while Ariana was with friends elsewhere at the same event. There was an alternate POV showing that Ariana was at the back of the crowd with friends while Tom and Raquel were together in the crowd, but I can't locate it.

Relevant Easter Eggs/Hints:

One of the most iconic news stories last year was an allegation of Tom Schwartz and Raquel making out at Coachella back in April. It is now believed that the original claim may have been that "Tom and Raquel" made out at Coachella, and the two had Schwartz go along with the claim that it was him in order to protect Sandoval and because Schwartz could easily be absolved since he did not attend in the first place. Nobody at the time thought to consider Sandoval, but this may push the initial affair date further back. A few anonymous sources confirmed that this story was the case.

Lightning Bolt Necklaces (photos here): An anonymous inside source claimed that the two have been wearing matching/coordinating lightning bolt necklaces as symbols of their relationship/love. The two have been traced back as far as September in this instagram post for both appearing wearing them. Another inside source confirmed that this is, in fact, a real thing between them and not just a coincidence.

Raquel referred to Tom Sandoval as the hotter Tom on WWHL when asked by Andy Cohen, to Scheana's surprise. Clip here. Raquel claimed off-camera that she only said this "because he has abs" when asked by Scheana.

Tom and Tom appeared on WWHL with Andy Cohen after the premiere episode. “When Schwartz was on with Sandoval on premiere night, there was some odd energy between them,” Cohen explained. “Schwartz was looking at Sandoval the entire time –almost for guidance on answers.” Article

The Season 10 trailer had a couple clips alluding to Sandoval and Raquel that didn't make sense at the time given that she was rumored to be pursuing Schwartz. This is a screenshot of one of the clips. The trailer also brings up the topic that Ariana and Sandoval had an open relationship, which Ariana shut down immediately

I want to know who wrote Tom's apology, because no WAY he took any accountability with his own brain. Nor did he give two shits about how Ariana would feel.

I'm really eager to see a "greatest hits" video of the worst things Sandoval has ever said on the show, cause I'm sure I don't remember it all and I am thinking of watching the show from the beginning again, in order to remember all the delicious drama from past seasons (when they were younger and dumber and even more reckless with the cheating and the bad relationships - the good years of the show are behind it unless they get a new cast...which might happen somewhat now, if the show is to keep going!).

I came into Vanderpump towards the tail end and have only really watched the last 3ish seasons and then some of the older best of episodes that my wife curated for me so I could see all the drama, drink-throwing, fist-fights, etc.

You are definitely correct, its glory years are in the past and it could do with a refresh. I mean, I'm reminded of the Fast & Furious and how the original film had the crew stealing VCRs and DVD players and now they're international spies.

The OG Vanderpump crew used to all be servers and the drama between the staff. Now its just a bunch of club owners and lifestyle influencers, and the drama is just not as interesting as it used to be. Here's hoping this drama (real or fake, who cares) gets it back to where it used to be. This show is best when its a hot-mess and everyone is mad at everyone else.

Although I'm not sure I can rewatch Stassi and Jax and Kirsten all over again.

The show is better for not having Kirsten & Jax. They are literal poison to everyone who is around them. But there's no denying they made for great TV villains!!

For me the restaurant was key - it always has younger people working, and the vibe of the L.A. spot is very much SUPPOSED to be sexy and dramatic - this is why Lisa hires young servers - it just so happens that those environments create very volatile relationships amongst those people with dating and cheating and friends fighting. It's why she monetized it in the first place - because the drama already existed. Now that the cast is so much older, we're hearing about sobriety, child-rearing and fertility issues, divorces, their own podcasts and businesses - it's WAY less interesting! I want the show to revolve around the restaurant again, that's where the action is.

Which is also partly why this latest scandal hit so hard - we haven't had anything this messy in a while!

Idk, I had been really enjoying seeing these people "grow up" and, despite my frustrations with them, had grown a little attached to them as recurring figures.

But it's true that the moment I knew this was a show for me was when they were shown living in those grimy little apartments, taking smoke breaks in the alley behind Sur, and when James Kennedy comes in with his over-leveraged BMW to mock Tom (was it Tom Sandoval?) and his sensible Honda. And when Stassi wanted to take a bunch of Sur friends out of town for her birthday, so there was a little gambit about who would cover their restaurant shifts. Those parts were relatable and hilarious and fascinating.

Prior to that, "reality tv" for me was like a desperate Bachelor-type competition in tuxedos and evening gowns, or the Real World where nobody's living anything resembling their real lives in real homes with real jobs. Or, worst of all, shows where the participants are unable to consent--like Honey Boo Boo, Toddlers in Tiaras, etc. It's much, much easier to relax and enjoy something where all participants are informed and consenting adults.

I think it's ironic that they have a reality show, but hide the affair from the show. It would have made great material! That's what bugs me about reality shows. They puff up silliness while hiding their actual realities.

But the affair was hidden until recently!! Current episodes airing were filmed back in mid-2022, so nobody (?? remains to be seen who knew what when) was going about with the knowledge that the affair was happening at the time. And when it came to light last week, the camera crews re-upped for more filming so they can catch the fallout. You can trust that they're going to make as much hay as possible from this.

Yeah that's my point. The stars of the show hide their actual reality and all we are left with is commenting after the fact, or the reality show equivalent of sports commentary.

Went to the same high school as Tom - he was a senior when I was a freshman, he was a trumpet section leader. He was very much the dude that all the girls had crushes on, he had a local modeling gig - until it closed, he was plastered on the wall at the NW Plaza Famous Barr men's section. He is the most famous alum from my high school, which really, really rankles me. Is this the kind of shit we want to be famous for?

The Vanderpump Rules:
1. Please don't smoke in bed.
2. Please don't operate the grinder or press if you've been drinking.
3. Please don't go up to the roof to eat your lunch.
4. Please, even if you are very hot, do not go up to the roof to sleep.
5. There should be no going up on the roof at night.

Good night, you princes of shame, you drama queens of West Hollywood.

It's okay, the most famous alum from my high school wrote the "Axis of Evil" speech for George W.

At least y'all have famous alumni from your high schools. I've got an Elvis impersonator and an artist in Berlin. (And in some circles, I might be the "most famous", and I'm a nobody.)

I just checked my high school's Wikipedia page; there aren't a lot of people under "Famous alumni" and I have heard of precisely none of them.

Kevin Garnett was in my graduating class. He was a nice guy, IIRC. Almost got railroaded for a hallway fight from the administration during our senior year.

....My high school doesn't have a Wikipedia page either.
