Radio Free Fedi: celebrating sound, agency and avoiding walled gardens | supporting fedi artists
This is small web, consent driven, artist populated, non-commercial mechanism, attribution promoting, community radio for the fediverse. As with everything your mileage may vary but let's try this out and hope we can discover some of the awesome talents that are on the fediverse...radio free fedi is open licensed artists AND copyright using artists who have awesomely granted consent for inclusion in this project. You can too!

"We expect classic standard fediverse etiquette of no nazis or fascists, no harassment or abuse of any kind, no racism, no bigotry, no ableism, trans lives matter, black lives matter. We want to radiate inclusiveness and empathy and also rock some kick ass tunes, sounds and words. Please let us know if we get anything wrong or we are accidentally promoting anything untoward."

Never thought I'd get into listening to random stuff on the "radio" after having podcasts as background noise for so long, but this is really great so far. ("So far" being about 20 minutes at ~9pm Central European Time - not sure how much it'll vary over time)

Read the link, but had to google what the fediverse is. Interesting stuff, I will have to explore it more!

neat, thanks for posting!

Cursory googling suggests Fedi is an Iranian producer but that doesn't seem right based on what I'm hearing. Would be helpful to have more context in the original post.

Fediverse = Mastodon, as far I know.

Sounds cool but I still don't know what the fediverse is.

The Fediverse is a network of small independent social media sites linked by common software protocols (links). Mastodon is a big part of it.

It's often interchangeably called "Mastodon", but people using other software than Mastodon itself get annoyed by that.

Mastodon is a subset of the Fediverse.

The wikipedia page has a reasonable precis:

The fediverse (a portmanteau of "federation" and "universe") is an ensemble of federated (i.e. interconnected) servers that are used for web publishing (i.e. social networking, microblogging, blogging, or websites) and file hosting, but which, while independently hosted, can communicate with each other.

Usenet on the Web, essentially.

Rocking the Fediverse now.

Thanks!

The distinction between the fediverse and Mastodon is important not just because of digital biodiversity (ideally we don't want Eugen Rochko dictating the de facto standard for activitypub) but because activitypub can do more than just the Twitter-ish microblogging that Mastodon, Misskey, and Pleroma enable. It also enables projects like Peertube, Bookwyrm, Funkwhale, and Pixelfed to federate not just with themselves, but with other implementations.

I realize that's a barrage of meaningless proper nouns, which I guess exemplifies the challenge of creating social computing without a marketing department.

Fediverse: imagine if RSS worked across all platforms, and every platform communicated with the others.

Individuals can download and install the various Fediverse softwares for free, and then let the installations be used by as many or few people as they want. (Think old-school forum software, if you could see and participate in forum discussions on any "federated" forum just by logging into your profile on any single "federated" forum...without having to sign in or create profiles there or anything. Gravatar is a tiny tiny taste of this "create one profile and use it everywhere" concept.)

Also, imagine if instances could block other instances at the admin-level, isolating raging-assface instances or egregiously-commercial "brand" servers. (This along with user-level block and mute capabilities.) Different instances have different moderation guidelines too, so if a small group of users want a super-duper-no-conflict-allowed safe space, they can do that as long as someone is able and willing to act as the admin.

Mastodon is just one application in a pretty big universe. There are even alternative microblogging apps - Mastodon is just the most well-known.

creating social computing without a marketing department

Thanks to everyone for trying to explain the Fediverse.

I have to say, there's a pretty big knowledge gap here and I'd love something like Mastodon to take over for Twitter but it's going to be a tough road.

This post has motivated me to finally set up Mastodon but it's a bit hard to figure out, I need to choose a server and it gives me 50 choices. Now I need to go research how hard it is to switch servers if I choose unwisely.

I'm a very tech-oriented person who supports computer users for a living and sometimes has to explain social networking to them, and I have my own Apache server and have a website that is 5 years older than Google but it's still not super easy for me. I can't even begin to imagine how the regular folk are going to find their way there...

ANYWAY, the actual topic of this post is awesome and it took me about 2 clicks to start hearing new music, so everyone should check that out.

So yeah, the music!
They're growing and have added a bunch more artists and a second channel, "Comfy" which is stuff of a more chill vibe.
The site is still Radio Free Fedi but the stream links have changed.
I probably could or should have framed the post differently but I didn't want to editorialize about it or make it specifically about Mastodon or the federated internet, which then sort of happened anyway 🤷 (thanks for the great explanations on that, folks.)
Anyhow, (editorializing now) I think it's pretty cool; part community radio station, part nerdy experiment.
Go check it out and submit your music or announcing skills if you're so inclined!

This is a nice addition to my streaming radio options, thanks, chococat.

a second channel, "Comfy" which is stuff of a more chill vibe

I did get a quick laugh out of rules for "Comfy," though:

No spoken or sound collage pieces at the top/bottom of hours, no harsh frequencies or vocals, no counterpoint and hopefully nothing that jumps out at you.

I mean, I get that the more chill channel is probably designed to be work accompaniment but no counterpoint? That seems a bit extreme.

no counterpoint?
Haha, didn't notice that.

It can be terribly upsetting, I guess.
