As Carol Burnett is being celebrated for being quite aged, still alive, still working, and still hilarious, let's look back at this 1964 television adaptation of Once Upon A Mattress [1h11m], the 1959 Broadway musical that made Burnett famous. Also in the cast are Joseph Bova, Jack Gilford, Jane White, and Elliot Gould in his first appearance on any screen. This video was posted April 9 by Sam Gilford (Jack's son) with the description "carol gave me this copy ok? for Erenia"

Several songs from the original musical were cut to fit the television running time.

A bonus from just yesterday: Carol Burnett On Turning 90, Guest Starring On Better Call Saul & Being Related To Bill Hader [14m], from Jimmy Kimmel Live.

Yes, thanks for sharing this. I've seen the Disney version of "Mattress" where Carol Burnett plays the Queen, and does a great job

I also just read the autobiography ("Shy") of Mary Rogers, who wrote the music for "Once Upon a Mattress". Mary Rogers is also the daughter of composer Richard Rogers, and in her autobiography, she is brutally frank about her life and her feelings for her parents and others. I'm not sure I like her.

As a prepubescent kid who only knew her from her show I thought she was just dazzlingly attractive, far more so than any of the starlets who made guest appearances (that did happen, didn’t it?)

In the years following many a high school class performed this musical, including my older brother's. Knowing the story, I did not want to go, so I've never seen it; perhaps I should give it a go now.

I'm old enough to remember when this aired. My sister and I laughed ourselves silly. Thanks for posting!

Oh, fantastic. Thanks for this! She’s amazing and I loved hearing her talk about the BCS experience. I would love to meet her and say thanks for all the laughs.

I had never seen this until today, although I knew it existed. Looks like Burnett has played her role in four different productions on screen of this, starring with this and most recently in 2005.

She moved from Princess Winnifred to Queen Aggrevain by 2005.

This play has had just really fascinating casting all along. When Gilford left as King, William Lee (Mr. Hooper) took over the role from being the understudy. When Burnett left, Ann B. Davis took over as Winnifred. Imogene Coca played it for a while. Buster Keaton was the King for a bit.

The 1996 revival has Sarah Jessica Parker and Jane Krakowski.

There was a TV version in 2005, with Tracy Ullman and Dennis O'Hare, as middle-aged (which I thought very age-appropriate) as the couple, and Carol Burnett as the Queen. Paid version on youtube.

(I agree with you, Modest House about finding Mary Rodgers hard to like after reading Shy.)

Huh, I actually liked her after reading Shy.
