a beautiful retro nostalgia trip

Capcom's 40th Anniversary Site Is An Incredible Digital Museum With Playable Retro Games [Capcom Town] “Capcom has launched a beautiful 40th-anniversary website which celebrates the company's history, as well as shares artwork and design docs, and acts as a hub for some of the developer's biggest titles. [...] The town is segmented into areas for certain franchises — Street Fighter has a dojo in the top right corner, for instance, while Monster Hunter occupies the space in front of the giant arcade machine. If you're an eagle-eyed fan, then you'll spot some other small references to Capcom characters throughout. [...] You can pop into the C.M.D Museum to look at artwork from many of Capcom's best titles — there is some never-before-seen concept art for some games, high-resolution artwork of characters we've never had access to, and design docs for the original Mega Man, Ace Attorney, and Street Fighter II. An archivist's dream, basically. Also, remember the arcade we mentioned above? Well, there are a handful of playable retro games over there — these include Mega Man, Mega Man 2, Mega Man X, Street Fighter II, and Final Fight, and you can play them in English or Japanese. You can also read through the game's instruction manuals and have a look at the cartridges for those titles.” [via: Nintendo Life]

It sure is pretty, but I couldn't figure out how to play any games.

Click the hamburger icon in the top right ☰ and then select 'retro games' and once you click on the game and the language setting, you can click the ? to view the keyboard controls or you can hook up a controller and play that way. Haven't tested the controller setting hookup just yet, so unsure how well that works.

But loving all the instruction manuals and art you can pour through.

I'm not sure what happened over there but Capcom is absolutely crushing it recently. Between this and Street Fighter 6 (which, in my opinion, is one of the best and most accessible fighting games ever made) they are really stepping up their game (sorry).

Okay, I have a secret opinion that I have never shared that I have to unload on you all:

I think Dr. Wright, like it was romanized in the manual localization of the original Mega Man, is a much better English name for Rock's creator than Dr. Light. Wright implies someone who makes things, Light is just a generic good-sounding word, and isn't really a last name used in English. I expect they changed it so it wouldn't get confused with Wily's initial in the big "Dr.W" logos before every boss room starting with Rockman/Mega Man II.

Dr. Wily's name, mind you, is perfect. (And Dr. Wily is my favorite Capcom villain. He loves his work!)

That worked! I was confused since the intro text said "click on stuff to play games!" and then I saw Ryu, so I clicked on him, and he shot a fireball but the building behind him was "under construction." Clicking on that map did not lead to playable games! But this is clearly designed for people who want to take their time exploring, and not for the grumpybear69s of the world who want to just get to the playin'.

True, but dude's been increasingly unhinged for years now.

Early Dr. Wily looks like he could be the mascot for a small chain of retail software stores.

We need more villains with skull belt buckles.

Just popping in to note that the upcoming remaster of Capcom's best adventure game has a demo out now.

I think Dr. Wright, like it was romanized in the manual localization of the original Mega Man, is a much better English name for Rock's creator than Dr. Light.

I endorse this if only because it would open up the possibility of that character being related to Phoenix Wright, tying both series together in much the same way that the Wolfenstein and Commander Keen series are connected.

I still want an official localization of Ace Attorney Investigations 2.

Now I'll be able to justify spending my entire allowance at the bowling alley the day I received it!

It won't stay on the "English" tab in the gallery selection, even though I have it set for "English" at the bottom of the hamburger menu and allowing preference cookies.

But the graphics are 3D and the character design isn't by Akiman. How can it be good?

Allow me to cosign this. If you have been wondering about getting into fighting games this is the one. The single player will let you design a character and then just kind of wander around while you learn the ropes. And that's it. You can walk around and fight and learn the controls for as long as you want, and it'll be there for you when the inevitable happens.

They'll be teaching this design in schools next semester.

Just a black screen in Firefox. Google Maps has this problem too sometimes, maybe something to do with WebGL, idk.

It works okay in current Firefox for me. Maybe it's a graphics card issue?

Can you remap the control cross to the directional buttons? the ASDF JKL or whatever mapping is not great for me.. Playing the retro games is pretty fun.
