Happy Pride Day! After trailing out singles such as Contact and On The Run for months, Kelela [Wikipedia] finally released her second album Raven [YT playlist] earlier this year after a long hiatus. During this break, she went on a bit of a journey [Grounded: the revival of Kelela, Dazed, Sept 2022] that is a bit breathtaking in its scope and courage. NPR's It's Been A Minute profiled/interviewed Kelela [22m] earlier this year, for a different take on the same story, with background and music samples and a really involved interviewer. The Dazed article has more details on the curriculum she sent to her people. Thanks to eyeball for suggesting this artist. posted by hippybear (3 comments total) 3 users marked this as a favorite

I saw the video for "Washed Away" just a few days ago and I was blown away—pun not intended, I swear. It looks like it was shot on Arrakis but it's actually Ethiopia. Kelela said in the pinned comment:
"Extending the warmest thank you to everyone running up ‘Washed Away’ rn. Recorded this track in the midst of uncertainty and a lot of my first takes made it to the final. I really didn’t think I’d hit on anything that would resonate out the gate, but I can see now that it was my willingness to try that paved the way for self belief and renewal. Hope it makes you feel the same🫀"
And I was amazed to think that something sounds so effortless can emerge from such uncertainty, and reminded that someone with so much talent and influence faces the same uncertainty that we all do.

My friend and I are keen to make a drum-n-bass flip of it, but it turns out to be close to 117bpm. Maybe a funk flip? I don't have stems, and AI vocal extraction isn't working well, but the arrangement is roomy enough that we could just use the whole track. Just for fun. Anyhow, thanks for this post. Happy pride!
