Happy Pride Month! Being an old, I'd never heard of JoJo Siwa [Wikipedia] before RobinofFrocksley mentioned her. At the age of 20, she's a pop star, an online influencer, and even is a video game [Nintendo]. Here, JoJo sits with Demi Lovato in 2021 for a 40 minute conversation about her life as a young queer icon. She's been talking this month about how she felt safe coming out on social media. [EOnline] She springboarded into pop stardom at the age of 13, outside of her earlier childhood reality show career, with her anti-bullying anthem BOOMERANG [3m30s], which currently has well over 976 million views.

Thank you for this post, I have loved seeing her becoming the out and proud young queer icon she is. It's so vital to kids to see their idols be proud of who they are. Her speaking out loud about who she is and who she loves is sending ripples of change through the turbulent sea of the art that is social media and it is making waves that will help to carry other queer kids to the shores of their own self-discovery.

Love this bit from the interview you posted:

"Be yourself," she urged. "You have to know that you're always changing. You're always growing. You're always evolving. Never, ever put yourself in a box. And never ever limit yourself."

JoJo first became famous from Dance Moms, which compared to (I guess) MeFi favorite Vanderpump Rules is a much trashier reality show, where the primary dance teacher Abby Lee Miller regularly ranks and berates children aged 8-14 and their mothers, and was actually sent to Federal Prison for lying on her taxes while the show was running. Supposedly she was a 'ringer' brought in by the producers for her dancing skillz and to create extra drama. However, Abby regularly features dance routines for the children that celebrate LGBTQ though dance. JoJo ended her time on the show when she got some individual tv appearances outside the show.

On the show, JoJo wasn't really among the best dancers on the team, but did pretty well in duets and groups.
