Oh man, for a second I thought you meant literally, like John Lithgow will come to my house with a bucket of paint and apply it liberally to my dog using a paintbrush and/or a roller.

(also wait, the title says Natasha Lyonne will help me solve the Sunday puzzle, but then the auction description says the Wednesday puzzle? which is it? I DEMAND TO KNOW)

Sorry. That's the kind of sloppy work we get during a writers' strike.

The hand-painted sculpture [of Dr Smith] was gifted to Parker Posey from the Irwin Allen estate.

Okay there's a backstory that needs to be told here.

It’s actually a threat. Pay John Lithgow money or he will break into your house in the middle of the night and paint your dog.

I'm seriously tempted by both the Hawaiian shirt and the Bill and Ted script.

And by having Natasha Lyonne help me with the crossword (which is the stupidest thing I've ever heard and I love it).

I would totally pay more for a meeting with Bob Odenkirk alone than with David Cross also. I loved Cross on Mr Show. That's probably my favorite show of all time. But an evening with Bob? My friend who introduced me to Mr Show and I always had debates on who was better. Bob or David. I was Team Bob from the beginning.

It’s actually a threat.

Exactly what my friend said about Lena Dunham Will Paint a Mural in Your Home.

I find the idea of John Lithgow painting a watercolor portrait of my dog so soothing. I've been contemplating it during times of stress.

If I had a zillion dollars I would be tempted by the Bob's Burgers song and the Tom Waits fedora - causing me to imagine having the Bob's Burgers folks write a song about me and my Tom Waits fedora!

These are such cool items and such a great thing they're doing. Thank you for posting this, The corpse in the library!

I don't need any help thanks, Natasha, but I'll teach you my crossword frisbee game. I start by filling in a word and hand the puzzle to you. Next, you add one that touches my word and hand it back. Just taking turns solving, always building on what's there, and believe it or not, there's an element of tossing a frisbee involved, because you start to try for style points. Now just a couple words left, then one, dang you are a good solver. Okay, well thanks, Natasha, that was fun. Nice to meet you and good luck in your career, I'm rooting for you. What's that, a kiss on the cheek? You're too kind.

So, here's the thing -

I'm unemployed at the moment, technically. I am on a serious budget, and while there's been some recent job-front movement I'm still not out of the woods. I am seriously, seriously not in a position to make anything but absolutely utilitarian purchases right now.

Even so I am THISCLOSE to bidding on that Tom Waits hat.

God, the Busy Philipps one would be really cool just to shoot the shit and learn pottery. I don't need to be like "So what's Courteney Cox like IRL? What's Martin Starr like IRL? What's Busy Philipps like IRL?" She just seems cool from what little I know, and also pottery.

Note that the Arnold Stang character, Sparrow, was painting a dog like this right at the beginning of "The Man With The Golden Arm" (1955) for some hustle, I forget exactly what.

Breaking news!

The UAW launches a historic strike against all Big 3 automakers

You know what I'm looking forward to? All the talented writers scratching their quills dry over the 1930s disney strike for the next netflix blockbuster. Or that time coal miners on strike were the victims of the first fucking air-strike in the US. Sixteen tonnes in 4k!

I really believe this. The screenwriters are going to be telling this story. It will be compelling, motivated, inspired, and overall culture-shifting. Unions are back!

Every time in the US that people band together to try to get some meaningful change to happen, circumstances, and of course very very rich people, find some way to swat it down. Remember Occupy?

Still, I have hopes that this time it will be different.

Why are the barely-getting-by being asked to help the down-on-their-luck when the down-on-their-luck are on the same team as the wealthy celebrities? Seems like the wealthy celebrities should be able to foot the bill.

I’m all for solidarity, but am I missing something here?
posted by khrusanthemon at 3:19 AM on September 15, 2023 [2 favorites]

This is the wealthy celebrities helping.

Also - they're giving up all their income to support the strike, even though they aren't the ones who really need these new contract terms. Solidarity!

They presumably are helping in other ways too, even though they also don't have work right now and don't know when they'll work again. Actors generally aren't billionaires or anything - even the successful ones. They're gig workers. Every job is a temporary job. And the older they get, the harder it is to get jobs.

So anyway, I think this is great, and I really wish I lived in LA so Adam Scott could walk my dog (and also tell me all about Parks and Rec and The Good Place.)

It's Never Lurgi : And by having Natasha Lyonne help me with the crossword (which is the stupidest thing I've ever heard and I love it).

She seems like she’d be good at it but it might not be nearly as much fun as having Gary Busey come over your house to explain Marmaduke.

Apparently Dwayne Johnson, Nicole Kidman, Julia Roberts, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Meryl Streep and Oprah Winfrey (and a bunch of others) have all given SAG-AFRA a million dollars or more, although that was for their Emergency Financial Assistance Program not Motion Picture & Television Fund's crew healthcare fund. But there are celebrities who are giving large sums. I suspect folks like Natasha Lyonne, while rich by my standards, are not rich like any of the folks listed above.

They probably already are contributing, and are trying to encourage more non-celebrity, non-studio-exec wealthy folk to chip in.

Seems like the wealthy celebrities should be able to foot the bill.

Beyond just the fundraising aspect of this effort, it's great PR. It gives the internet and news outlets another angle to talk about the strike and it centers the financial hardships of those who are striking.

An acquaintance from college is a SAG member with a few small credits to his name , and he drives for Uber/waits tables, to pay the bills between jobs. He has been posting a lot of picture from the picket lines and other notable names are comming out( and bringing snacks)

I have only ever heard great things about John Lithgow the person but ever since his run on Dexter I find the man absolutely fucking terrifying. Somehow, this impression isn't helped by the idea of him quietly watercolouring a picture of someone's Labradoodle.
