From the UAW's FAQ:

Why aren't we all striking every facility across the Big Three?

That option is still on the table.

Striking facilities selectively is a brilliant move. Thanks to just-in-time manufacturing, taking out a parts supplier or distribution point is just as effective as stopping a whole factory because now it's the exact same thing.

And you're conserving your strike fund for when you really need it. Go union!

UAW reports Tim Scott for "You strike, you're fired' comment

Tim Scott is an employer too; the UAW is complaining he's violating the rights of his own employees with this sort of thing. This will obviously not have any big legal impact but I love UAW deciding to be willing to launch a sortie against this. (And Tim Scott has said many other very stupid things about workers, so getting him in the news helps UAW too.)

Just passed the SPO center, folks are getting the lawnchairs. Lots of honking.
When they struck last time, management were livid and imposed draconian measures, for example: " my child is in the hospital". That person was fired, another guy I knew got fired for being 2 minutes late

tier gotta go.

Biden is going to join workers on the picket line next week.

I thought the Teamsters' rhetoric and messaging during the UPS contract fight was pretty good, but the UAW's has been fantastic. I especially like Shawn Fain's constant emphasis that this strike isn't just about defending UAW jobs, but fighting for the whole working class.

Labor Notes has ongoing coverage of the strike. At least one former Labor Notes writer, Jonah Furman, is working for the UAW these days, and it shows in the union's messaging.

I assume this if the first ever visit by a president to a picket line? Has there been another one?

I've been in the UAW for 19 years (legal services lawyer, not auto worker), and I am so excited about Shawn Fain and the other new leadership. The UAW was essentially a one-party state for 70 years, run by a group called the Administration Caucus. They were corrupt and weak, truly did not stand for the members. In late 2022/early 2023, the UAW had its first ever direct election of union leadership, and the reform candidates smoked the AC candidates. Fain and many of the other top people have only been in office for 6 months. I have no idea how they pulled this off so fast.

My Region has a new Director (Brandon Mancilla), and the past few months are the first time I've ever heard from Region 9A staff in any capacity. It's like there are people now, where there was only a black hole before. I'm so psyched about all of this.

From that article about Tim Scott that mark k linked to above:

The carmakers have offered a wage increase of around 20 percent, while the autoworkers union has sought a 36 percent hike over four years, as well as four-day workweek, defined-benefit pensions and company-financed health care in retirement. ...

“The other things that are really important in that deal is that they want more money working fewer hours,” he said of the UAW strike earlier this week. “In America, that doesn’t make sense,” he added.

This from a guy who gets paid $175K a year, by the taxpayers, to work 3 days a week.

I learned today that one of the Union's goals is the 32-hour full-time work week. I negotiated this 15 years ago as part of compensation for a below market (but still above median) salary and it is--bar none--the one thing that has most improved my quality of life. Every one should be full time at 32 hours a week. If they can get it, I hope everyone can.
