Yaxunah really is the middle of nowhere, but they have been a phenomenon here in Mérida and across the Yucatán for a while now.

The stomping they delivered in Arizona was the talk of the town for a few days.

Different barefoot & huipil wearing softball team, very similar story, with indigenous Mayan language narration - Las Diablillas (the Devil-ettes) from Quintana Roo

The admittedly small sample of Mayan women I know would all be baffled by the concept of using protective gear for softball. Some of the younger ones do wear helmets on motorcycles though.

Initially that may have been true. But now they seem to have modern equipment as in gloves, bats, catcher's gear, etc. Possibly donated. Probably more of a signature or trademark now.
