I am all for engineers taking inspiration from nature, but maybe let's solve the retractable barbs problem....

A bumblebee stinger would be a better idea in my humble opinion.

One researcher makes an offhand comment about the valves (article and :45 in video) which are kind of cool but remind me that in a one-and-done system like a honeybee stinger, longevity presumably isn't a big selection driver.
