Recent micro-fiction An Obituary to Birdsong at speculative fiction/science fiction purveyor If There's Anyone Left. From Issue 2: Travel Guide to Spaceport Rest Stops. From Issue 1: It Is a Beautiful Day on the Internet, and You Are a Horrible Bot. And previously (in 2021) on MeFi.
Came for the rest stops, and stayed for the subplot. Apostles of The Undying Church haven't yet come to our...wait. I'm not sure of that. Never mind.
OTH, See Spaceport USA in New Mexico by traveling on I-25.
The rest stop Southbound from Albuquerque is at Exit 72.
Restrooms, vending machines, a couple of Ramdas for shady dining on whatever you have in your ice chests. Dogs on leash, dog walking area. Not posted but relevant: rattlesnakes may wander about the area; do not pet them. If you are pulling one of those godawful house-trailers or driving one of those godawfully huge motor homes, it's okay to park in the area designated for big trucks. But do not park your little cars there, as it makes truck drivers angry, especially if they don't see them until after they turn into a slot between two other trucks, and even more especially if their bladders are urgently trying to void that last quart of coffee they drank. Also, also, rattlesnakes.
Northbound traffic from Las Cruces drivers will bypass the POE pullout for big trucks and leave I-25 at Exit after mile marker 22. Sometimes auto traffic is diverted into the POE so the Border Patrol can see if you are trafficking in illegal persons from south of The Border. If that stop becomes part of your trip, don't worry about it, just roll down your windows, smile pleasantly at the officer, and don't make any stupid jokes. The Border Patrol doesn't divert southbound traffic, at least, not yet. I guess they don't worry about smuggling folks from Albuquerque or Colorado.
Same rest stop facilities facilities as above. Also, rattlesnakes. The Spaceport's visitor center is a little further up the road and a lot closer to the freeway, but you probably want to see the runway, so don't bother with it unless you have kids in the car who can read road signs or you'll never hear the end of it. Also also, rattlesnakes.
