TimeGuessr is a game where you guess the location and year a photo was taken.

Either play today's (no spoilers!) or a random set.

It is GeoGuessr (prev) and Chronophoto (prev) put together.

I got 47,891 on my first set. Since then I've got worse and worse.

Man, I've gotten within a couple of KM and it still only gives me half points on location! 32,552 is my highest score, and I'm pretty happy with it.

42,281 but some of mine had really good hints and catered to my interests. Shame on me for not successfully distinguishing the Alps from the Pyrenees though.

I'm pretty good at identifying the specific country, although less so with pinpointing the location exactly. The years I tended to be within 2-3 years if I didn't get it exactly or just completely wildly off.

This is fun.

At least I got the countries correct. But you can be 000s km off and still be in the right country.

Is it not possible to zoom in on the map? If you show me a picture of Notre Dame on fire, I could put a pin right in it unless you cheat by not letting me zoom in on the map.

You absolutely can zoom in on the map - just mouse over it and use your scroll wheel or equivalent.

this is really fun. ability to zoom does help: i got lucky and just got given one of the handful of most iconic photos ever taken, i.e. single-round score of 9999/10000 for dropping my pin on the guy dropping his pin on the reichstag; i actually missed by a few metres.

My biggest wrong one was guessing Haifa instead of near Bethlehem on one. Otherwise I'm surprised I did as well as I did (the only one I cheated was Guggenheim finding the actual address).

Oh there was a Chicago one and I guess liked 2002 but it was 2009 and I think there's something to this whole fashion has "stagnated" and everything is repeated and it's hard to figure out 2009 vs 2002 vs how you could compare 1989 to 1982 was more obvious. The Casualty of Casualness. I guess.

1. off by 2 years and 15.2 km ( my intial was 1979 and didn't zoom far enough to Manhattan)

I like this better than Chronophoto (previously) because the very often the photos are iconic or of a well-known event, so you can place it, but sometimes I learn a lot. I got one of Muhammad Ali that I knew was from him traveling to the rumble in the jungle, but it turns out the picture was taken in a different city than the fight happened in.

I'm really enjoying this.
Some thoughts:
- a lot of people were driving old cars in the 70s and 80s. So was I, but I forgot that.
- people were quite radical before ww2.
- there are some styles that don't change over 20 years, specially leisure clothes. Or they change and then change back

a cultural artifact of the pre-smartphone era, the one today with Obama is pretty amusing with the hordes of non-smartphone digital cameras being held up to photograph the man. also love that one guy holding up his laptop webcam.
