Biologist Deon Gilbert says this month's Victorian release of 70 juveniles from a spotted tree frog breeding pool is incredibly heartwarming. Researchers have bred 800 spotted tree frogs from 26 they collected in north-east Victoria in 2021. They have released the first 70 of those frogs into the wild.

This is good. I love frogs - I often come across them in the grass on dog walks and always pause to watch them for a bit. Am thankful the dog hasn’t chomped on one yet.

The last few years have been prime weather for frogs here - numbers around my house have boomed to the point where they're putting up serious audio competition to the cicadas (formerly bleating but now renamed screaming tree frogs, if anyone is curious). I hope these little southern cousins do well too.
