Sycamore Gap tree seedlings sprout, bringing refreshed hope after landmark was illegally felled. Seeds from the iconic Sycamore Gap tree that was illegally felled in the UK last year are springing into life at a specialist conservation centre in an effort to give the tree new life.

Amazing that they haven't caught who did this. I am no tree-felling expert, but the cuts on that tree look to be made with enormous power tool(s). Not like some teenagers with dad's borrowed stuff from the shed.

Plus, isn't there CCTV notoriously everywhere in the UK? At the very least this would have had to have been done by a group with a truck?

I've been to the site, and it's somewhat of a hike to get there. There's no place that CCTV would be installed there, and I'd actually struggle to think how they would power surveillance.

I suspect (though I can't say for sure) that this was professionally done too. Given that they've arrested four people but not proceeded any further, the police may not be able to stand up charges. It likely took some fairly significant teamwork to get the tools needed to cut this tree down to the site. You are right, it wasn't a teenage lark.

All the above is personal speculation.

I know there are far worse things happening in the world, but the felling of that tree was just horrific. its a tree!! It wasn't hurting anyone.

I'm so glad steps are being taken to heal that wound. I hope the sprouts thrive and grow tall!

There are arrests and folks on bail, but my gnawing curiosity is the motivation to cut down this tree. I must know why!

I once observed from afar a man deliberately and illegally setting fire to gorse to increase grazing land for sheep, infuriating and reckless, but for him, worth the risk and lack of consequences. But cutting this tree? How could anybody gain from it?

I must know why!

I liveneara very large rugby stadium. From where I'm sitting, I have sight lines to two of the main pubs affiliated with stadium visitors. The unsatisfying suggestion I have is that a lot of alcohol, a little cocaine, and the blindingly cruel pressure of British lad culture is all the "why" I would expect.
