Stardew Valley has received a huge new update on PC to celebrate the 8th anniversary of the game (with Switch and other versions coming soon). 1.6 has been a long time in the making from creator Eric Barone (otherwise known as ConcernedApe). Want to know what's going on? Read the patch notes (contains spoilers!) or browse the wiki. Yes, it's time to fetch that hoe out of the shed and get those hands dirty!

I'm rather excited, one of my favorite local tea shops has a "Valley Farmer collection", which they've brought back for this patch.

Ok cool update but what is this whole "you have some new ideas to think about" message that keeps popping up??

Ok so I'm just behind the times and this is simply a message indicating you've increased a skill:

"You've got some new ideas to sleep on..."

Carry on....(the update is really nice!)

It means that you've levelled up in a skill! Pretty handy for when you're chasing the next level and aren't keeping count of how many trees you've chopped down or slimes you've destroyed or whatever.

Oh, man, I am so excited to hear this! I think I've bought this game three times for three different systems and I have zero regrets.

We started playing Stardew Valley on Switch just a few weeks ago when we realized there is a split screen co-op mode. I bounced off the game by myself but together, I can go around and do all the quests and collecting and the community center while my husband farms and woos people's dads (♥️ Demetrius). And we have three chickens and a cow but didn't realize we need two barn upgrades to get a sheep 😱 it really doesn't hold your hand which is more fun for me with a partner.

Anyway this is my endorsement of Stardew Valley co-op farming.

My wife and I have tried co-op mode on PC several times, and always had frustrating technical problems that led to us giving up and just playing solo separately. Knowing that the Switch version has split-screen coop is a strong argument for trying that version!

- Spouses now have a seven-day “honeymoon” period after marriage which prevents them from laying in bed all day due to being upset.
- You can now sit in chairs during festivals.
- Male farmers are no longer forced into wedding clothes on their wedding day, so you can choose your own outfit for the wedding.
- Changed parrot flap sound to be different from bat flaps.

So excited! I'm still stuck at work, but I am absolutely vibrating with the need to get home and start a new save. Love the post title, it was definitely my favorite line in the patch notes.

Also, truly appreciate that this update has so much in it that's specifically intended to make the game easier to mod. In fact, when Barone talked about the 1.6 early on, he mentioned that would be the update's main purpose. The modding community is so great, with such an in depth and creative variety of mods, and it's really amazing that Barone supports it so much, to the point of rewriting huge swathes of the game's code to make it easier to mod, and giving modders early access to that code so they could have their mods updated and ready on the 1.6 release date. I'm no modder, but I took a quick look at the changes to the code for modders, and it looks like a real gamechanger for the breadth of things modders will be able to change and expand more easily now.

I'd have been perfectly happy with the modding update and some game tweaks here and there, so it's an absolute delight that the 1.6 update actually includes so much more content. And all for free if you already own the game!

Wait, this is my other favorite patch note: "Added a jingling sound when running with the cinderclown shoes on."

*cries impatiently in console* My all-time favorite game, savior of my mental health in 2016. Can’t wait to start a new farm when the update is ready for PlayStation!

fellow farmers, should I start a new farm for 1.6 or continue an existing one?

ConcernedApe has said that the update is best experienced with a new farm, since there are lots of little tweaks and additions right from the start of Year 1. The new farm format (Meadowlands) is very fun and cute so I'd recommend trying it out with a new save for sure!

Welp, I'm about to sink 150 more hours into Stardew

Serious question, has the fishing system changed much in the past, um... eight years? I remember really liking this game, but bouncing hard off the fishing as I found it both boring and stressful somehow, and it's central to the game. If that's been updated, I'll definitely give it another shot.

Nope, no updates to fishing other than various new varieties of bait. If you play on PC, I recommend using a mod to skip the fishing minigame if you hate it. CJB Cheats has an option for that, but if you don't want to be tempted by all the other cheats that mod offers (I use it to permanently set my movement speed faster, for one thing), there's the Skip Fishing Minigame mod that just does that.

I have sunk way too many hours into Stardew Valley, and am looking forward to restarting with the Meadowlands farm map and playing the Jojo branch, because dang I like the idea of being able to buy the Golden Walnuts...

I'm also finding myself deconstructing the game a bit more. Like, sure, cute that we drop into a community with huge income inequality (when we first land, we're a long way from buying a cup of coffee or a beer, and yet the denizens with no visible means of support and obvious addiction problems are in the bar with a drink quite often, and then later in the game we're the only person with a horse, though Lewis does have a truck that never runs, but we travel mostly via teleport). And, okay, pescatarian, great, we don't slaughter our animals, or even send them off for others to, and yet we go rampaging through underground civilizations that have created massive tiled structures while killing the residents for cloth... Or blasting the shells off those poor crabs and then pursuing them into the corners where they quiver in fear...

I've seen a lot of critiques of Ginger Island, but by the time I get there I could believe that Concerned Ape has created some of the stereotypes (like Professor Snail) as deliberate critiques.

Which... I guess it speaks to the brilliance that it's both occupied so much of my time, and got me thinking about these issues.

Unfortunately the skip fishing mod isn't updated to 1.6 yet. I am holding out for it before I get too deep back into the game. When it's the last rainy day of the season and you really need that fish to complete a community bundle and it finally comes up and then gets away and you have to wait a whole in game year to finish unlocking stuff? It's no good!

Here's a 1.6 compatible alternative: Yet Another Fishing Mod! It has a bunch of settings, but you can just pick the Instantly Catch Fish setting for all your skipping the minigame needs. Also, I know that feel, JDHarper. I use the CJB cheats option for situations like that, or if my hand/wrist just aren't up to the fishing minigame, since it's super quick to toggle on and off.
