Bulldog Utterly Bowled Over

Videos from The Dodo are usually a bit sappy but always heartwarming. However, Bulldog Obsessed With Bowls Gets A Special Delivery [3m20s] is full of exactly the kind of WTF that leads me to post it here.

At first I was like oh that's cute and then I was like ok now it's weird.

Great, I was fooled into watching more than 3 minutes of a dog’s bowl movements.

So, I guess peak internet.

Even the happiest bulldogs often seem put-upon or aggrieved to me, I guess just the way my anthropomorphism interprets their squishy little faces, so I'm imagining Theo's internal dialogue like:

man, these two legged people seem nice but what is with their bowl obsession, do they not realize how much managing these bowls take? ok sure, they seem busy, i will take ownership of the bowl management. it's a lot but i'll do my best to stay on top of it, because i love you guys. *proceeds to laboriously manage an ever-increasing bowl collection*

*sits back after a long day of bowl corralling* whew. okay. that's the last bowl chewed and dragged. finally a chance to relax. *two legged people make noises* *mysterious box appears* OH NO

His jaw is kinda messed up, maybe the thin rim of the bowls make them easier to pick up than other toys? Anyway I’m glad he’s happy.

My family owned a series of bulldogs. They are very much like adopting a slightly dazed, lazy, and flatulent uncle into the family.

They are incredibly patient with hyperactive children, but do get the expression of a Renaissance martyr in their eyes when the little buggers just wont stop.

The reveal of the dishwasher stuffed with bowls neatly encapsulates the way your life gets peculiar when you have a furry little weirdo to accommodate.

Something about his reaction to the box makes me think of Bill McNeil from Newsradio and his never-ending canes.

Not to read too much into the editing here, but do you think all of producer/director Stephanie Rodriguez' videos have the same, tongue-in-cheek, "this seemingly innocent scenario, while sweet, is also insane, because that is the nature of modern capitalist humanity" vibe to them?

Alas, I don't have the time at this moment to dig into her oeuvre and find out. If anyone else does, I hope you'll let us know what you find...

Now I just wish there had been a "this one displeases me" moment in the video.

I think there was a 'this displeases me' moment when he tried to lick the paper insert in one of the new bowls out and did not succeed.

Bulldogs, English or French, are noted for their skateboarding skills. We had English bulldogs when I was a kid. They have great hearts but are dumb as a post. My mom once dropped an open paper bag on the kitchen floor after emptying it. Our dogs heard the noise, came into the kitchen and totally freaked out. It was like seeing a UFO for them. They were barking their non-Einsteinian heads off in total terror.

But they were lovable. Apart from their violation-of-the-Geneva-accords silent but deadly room clearing farts, that is...

We had an Irish wolfhound like that. Several times we had to go to bed because we couldn't stay downstairs.

Besides the big ole serotonin hit from the Dodo, I really appreciate the stories they show of rescue work, fostering, etc. (I'll admit that in my heart I'm always a little bummed when they don't foster fail - although I absolutely recognize the importance of sending dogs/cats off to another home so you can foster more.)

I question the wisdom of having that dog around a pool.

I would wean doggy off the metal pans and get it to love silicon ones. Way too much noise. I need calm in my life

I question the wisdom of having that dog around a pool.

Ours were exceptionally strong swimmers. When I was a kid, my dad used to drive to the Payette River where we threw 3 foot long branches in the stream. They fought over each one all the way back to shore.

I'm wondering if that's the point of the bowls. Perhaps the pup has sight issues, so the sound of the bowls is what's attractive. Watching the glee in which it knocks down towers, I'm thinking the noise is the joy.

He has no head. His tremendous neck just ends in a goofy face.

I love him.

Had bulldogs growing up too. They are dumb, and yet, they are so stubborn that they’ll often develop a superhuman wiliness just to get their way.

Also, they will smoke you in a foot race/chase, even if it means major coronary/respiratory disaster. I got tackled many times in my life by my bulldogs, even when I had a sizable lead on them. Ah, good times.

I like it when dogs are weird and their people indulge whatever oddball things they're into. To me, that's what is charming about dogs.

(Cats are clearly weirdos too, but in a different, separately delightful way.)

The great scar where his tail once was makes me so sad.

I'm pretty sure that's his lil tan tail? Bulldogs and some other breeds are susceptible to "screwtail."

But no worries I will stalk his Instagram to be sure (bulldog_dad). Carefully examining each and every dog picture, tail or no, is a thankless job but I will do it.

They do have that 'pin the screwy tail on the bulldog' look more often than not. Their tail wagging is something else

The great scar where his tail once was makes me so sad.

He has a corkscrew tail, his is a little flatter and closer to the body than most, but bulldogs are born with those. Ours have had 'em all - perfect corkscrews, ice cream cone looking tails, cinnamon buns, no tails and so on. Sometimes they'll have an unusually deep tail pocket or an impacted tail and then the tail will often have to be removed. The rescue I work with just had to have that done on one of the new intakes.
