A joyful instigator

"I wanted to start an all-women punk rock band. My definition of punk rock is do-it-yourself, who cares if it’s sloppy or unprofessional. My definition of punk has little or nothing to do with politics or shaved heads and everything to do with what’s new and not in the mainstream. It’s about going on stage as you, full of rage, heartbreak and laughs. It’s about making the music you hear in your head and heart." from Rocker, writer and teacher: Remembering Laurie Lindeen of Zuzu’s Petals [MPR News]

I’m so glad to see this here. I lived in Minneapolis in the 90s, and their albums were on heavy rotation for me. Too soon is too damn right.

Laurie Lindeen was terrific. And pity the poor Westerberg family. They lost Laurie on the 1st, then Paul's mom (Johnny's grandma) Mary Lou on the very next day. Mary Lou's obit is very, very Westerbergian.

This is the real definition of punk rock.

Whenever they played Club deWash, it was the definition of a fun show. They had lots of good songs, but Cinderella's Daydream is still a huge catharsis.

I also remember her "The Many Faces of Zuzu's Petals, or, Sybil Does Dallas" article (concerning the many personas that emerge while touring) for the surprisingly readable Rolling Stone' Alt Rock-A-Rama book.
