wacky, beautiful, great: i'm visiting Budapest in the fall, and this has got me bouncing with anticipation (and crackly electro-retro sounds). thanks!

The town is pretty cool, but like this site it made me feel like I was in the movie The Trial sometimes. Its got that 30's modernist concrete feel to it.

I know it's not the MeFi way to criticize. But, um, isn't that site awfully pretentious? It didn't even particularly feel like the Budapest I know.

Pretentious like a David Lynch movie, and Lord knows I likes my David Lynch.

I don't think the artist is trying to actually digitize Budapest, Nelson. Ask 10 people to make a website about a place and they will all look different. Indeed how well could any of us put the look and feel of a place into a website, it's an art.

What I see in this site is "transition". From old to new, from eastern Europe to the EU, from totalitarianism to freedom, from heavy industry to electronica.

I wasn't very impressed. The site had a nice flash interface and the music transitioned from a great 30's vibe to something that felt like it was a bad dream, but the photos were not especially interesting. Nothing about them screamed "Budapest" or anything other than someone who took a roll of pictures of some urban decay.

some of the photos were good, but nothing prize winning, in my opinion.

All together though, the music and interface make the experience nice...

From Buda to Pest? The Danube separates Budapest's old from its new better than this site does.

I don't know. I like the pics, though they didn't light a fire under me to go there (I'd love to go, but not because of anyting I saw here). Some of the shots were a bit generic, but technically they were fine.

Pretentious? Sure. But a nice idea. I bet someone's going to use a similar interface to knock us over with a killer gallery sometime soon.

From Buda to Pest?

SpaceCadet, how long have you been sitting on that pun? Be honest.

Looks more like, say, Munich than Budapest... It kind of captures the centrally-planned drabness of the city from the time I left it: around 1987 or so. It's lot sexier now, really.

Best flash-preloader graphic, like EVER, imnsho.

No pun, honest! Buda and Pest used to be two cities, separated by the Danube - now it's Budapest. Buda is known roughly as the older side of town, Pest the newer (unless my brain has done a flipflop and it's the other way round?!).

I'd like to add that Budapest is the most beautiful city in all of Europe (IMHO ofcourse). And damn cheap too!
