Considering that's what I think of both of the above, that made my day. Thank you WolfDaddy!

That Guardian error is indeed quite humorous... but one has to wonder whether someone at all acquainted with HST's work would really have made that mistake.

The caption on Feb. 14 for a picture by Reuters with the continuation of an article about the Iraqi elections misstated the reason Abdul Aziz al-Hakim, a Shiite cleric, was weeping. He was participating in a mourning ritual as part of Ashura, a holy Shiite festival - not reacting to results showing that his political alliance had won a slim majority of seats. A second caption for a Reuters photo misstated the reason a Shiite was shown flagellating himself in a Baghdad procession. He was taking part in the same mourning ritual, not celebrating the election outcome.

From the NYT. Brilliant.

Possibly they were acquainted with HST's darkness, hardly less dark than RMN's own. Not to mention the one's guns and the other's bombs. Actually it isn't at all hard to confuse the two, except that Thompson was throw-up-in-the-ice-bucket funny and Nixon, uh, wasn't.

Exactly... I don't think Nixon was capable of being half as witty as the saying would suggest. I'll grant that he was very smart in matters of foreign policy, but his primary talent wasn't with words. Not words that wouldn't deserve the "expletive deleted"
treatment anyway.

Also from the Guardian last year:

"In our interview with Sir Jack Hayward, the chairman of Wolvehampton Wanderers, page 20, Sport, yesterday, we mistakenly attributed to him the following comment: "Our team was the worst in the First Division and I'm sure it will be the worst in the Premier League." Sir Jack had just declined the offer of a hot drink. What he actually said was: "Our tea was the worst in the First Division and I'm sure it will be the worst in the Premier League." Profuse apologies."

I find it interesting how many news organizations got the quote on HST backwards. I saw it on AP and in the Washington Post.

The Guardian is historically so (in)famous for its misprints that it is waggishly referred to as the Grauniad.

Re: doublepost. See if I had copied and pasted the link correctly into the search I would have found it, but I didn't I dropped the "www" when manually typing and thus didn't find the site on search.

I regret the the error.
