Why does God hate America?

Why does God hate America? Just ask the Westboro Church of Cretinism. They now show up at soldier's funerals carrying signs saying "We Hate You" and claim that the soldiers' deaths are a result of God's vengeance upon the USA which protects gays.

Suggestion...

Don't bother clicking the Westboro link, don't give them the satisfaction of adding another "visitor" to the count at the bottom of the page...I'm sorry I clicked it, don't repeat my mistake!

I'm not sure what the point of this fpp is, there will always be people who hate and claim it is god's will.. I frankly don't give a rip about them....

Oh for crying out loud. That asshole is nothing but a standard-issue troll. He gets a hard-on every time he sees his name in print. If y'all would stop feeding the troll, he'd go away.

Well, it's tough to argue with their logic. The OT invisible cloud guy (as recorded in the Hebrew fairy tales) was quite the vindictive asshat, so there's plenty of crap dogma the Christianists can dredge up from that shared tradition.

When Falwell made these pronouncements in the aftermath of 9/11, with Robertson sniggling "yes sirree diddly doo" next to him, I defended their viewpoints in debates, since this is, at least, internally consistent, given their premises of a psychopathic OT Creator who doesn't really like us that much.

People invent their deities in their own image, so it's not that suprising to see this level of sociopathy masquerading as religious dogma. They want authoritarian father figures, they make 'em.

ahem, Old Testament is pre-Christian. Perhaps this is a point ignored by the virulent haters.
The Christian era is New Testament with Jesus' message of love, not hate and violence. Eight beatitudes, not 10 Commandments.

“If they were protesting the government, I might even join them,” Danny Cotton, 56, said amid cries of “get out of our town” and “get out of our country.”
“But for them to come during the worst time for this family — it’s just wrong.”

Republicans and Democrats band together to run the fundamentalist hate-mongering asshats out of town on a rail. There might be hope for America yet. It brings a tear to this liberal's eye.

Unless, of course, I misread Mr. Cotton's statement and he actually meant that he'd join the fundamentalist hate-mongering asshats if they weren't protesting at a soldier's funeral. In which case, the tears remain, but for completely different reasons.

I guess nobody told the author(s) of the Gospel according to Matthew, then.

3:10 " … and thrown into the fire."
3:12 " … with unquenchable fire."
5:30 " … than for your whole body to go into hell."
7:19 " … thrown into the fire."
8:12 " … will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth."
10:28 "Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell."
13:40 " … burned in the fire … "
13:24 " … into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth."
13:50 " … and throw them into the fiery furnace where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth."
18:8 " … be thrown into eternal fire."
18:9 " … and be thrown into the fire of hell."
22:13 " … and throw him outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth."
23:33 "You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape being condemned to hell?"
24:51 " … and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth."
25:30 " … into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth."
25:41 " … depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels."
25:46 "Then they will go away to eternal punishment … "

You'll probably dismiss Heywood's point because of his inflammatory language, so allow me to point out in a more civil tone that there is overwhelmingly cruel vindictiveness to be had in your New Testament, too. Pretending it isn't there doesn't make it go away.

Also, Fred Phelps is a fucktard. But I thought we had already established that ad nauseam, no?

I've met a couple of Phred Filp's ilk. They are so in love with the idea of being martyrs they try and piss everyone off. The only thing you can do with them is ignore them and hope they jump into a furnace like Shadrack, Misack and Abednego to prove God's favor. I've seen them in the flesh. They're not far away from the magic coolaid.

Anyway, I am sure they drove down that highway with big woodies as they were being chased. Surely God must favor those who are so ostracized.

Faint of Butt, I was going to address the same point about that asshole, but you beat me to it. (And your moniker is by far the best on Mefi).

And yes, we've had the Westborough family on the front page enough.

Jeez, I thought this was going to be some kind of parody of Westboro (about as difficult as making fun of teenagers or shooting fish in a barrel), but it's an actual straight-ahead link to Westboro.

Hmmm, let us now consider the validity of their claims...let us treat this as an "issue," a "controversy," if you will, hmmm...

*nothing*

No kidding, Cranberry. But if you're paying attention prior to (and keep keep reading beyond) the Beatitudes, it becomes pretty clear that Jesus (as portrayed in the canonical Gospels), premises his warmy-fuzzy message on the sorta black-or-white vindictiveness that Yahweh earns a reputation for (justifiably, just ask Job!) throughout the OT.

Warm-fuzzy Jesus requires a pretty selective reading of the Gospels, as evidenced by your initial post and (presumably willfully obtuse, if not, I apologize) response.
