Once there was a band called Aqua. You probably know their song Barbie Girl. Apparently, a lot of other people know the song, and like it enough to make videos of themselves lip-synching to it. A lot of people. [a lot more and heavy youtube linkage inside]

inside a barbie world?

I like the song, don’t get me wrong.  But, not nearly as much as many of these people.  youtube returned over
1000 hits
for “Barbie Girl”.  They go from terribly amateur and obviously spur of the moment, to apparently rehearsed and prepared
(note the “Say Nope to Dope t-shirt). One contains an something I can only dub “hand bukkake”.  They go on
(bonus creativity points)  and on (very avant garde camera angle).  But one video struck me as different.  Lynne and Tessa apparently have done many
videos
, and I find them absolutely enchanting.  And for the feline contingent of MeFi, this one even has a cat in it.

(Sorry for the delay getting the more inside. When I copy/pasted, it had significant formatting trouble, and still does, but at least it is readable now)

I like the "Spur of the moment one" Those kids seem like they're having fun. The "Hand Bukkake" is just so bizzare... I kind of feel bad for those guys, almost.

Which one is Tessa and which one is Lynee? One of them looks like a (very) young Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

Pretty Young Thing by Lene off of Aqua is a fabulous pop record, as is the rest of her solo album.

Right, I've done some digging and they've put themselves on Google Idol and Lynne is all over the forum there. They're from Frankfurt and Tessa is the scrawnier-looking one with the shorter hair.
posted by cillit bang at 9:43 PM on June 16, 2006

Agree with cillit bang, Ynoxas, and delmoi. Tessa and Lynne are great. Especially... whichever one it is, the one with the rounder face. Amazingly expressive features. Natural performer. Utterly charming. Someone please fish this sparkling young woman out of the old shoes and tires of YouTube and give her a nice modeling or acting contract.
posted by Slithy_Tove at 9:44 PM on June 16, 2006

Ah, so the videos are sort of stolen then. Some one ripped them from google and put 'em on YouTube, watermarking some of them in the process. Kinda lame.
posted by delmoi at 9:46 PM on June 16, 2006

Lynne & Tessa (apparently official). Shoepal, is your cousin German?

Google Video is apparently where they upload their stuff, so anything on YouTube or elsewhere is ganked.

The other Google Idol-anointed favorites are Pomme and Kelly of the Netherlands.

What we really need is a video battle of Lynne and Tessa vs Pomme and Kelly [previously discussed on MeFi].

I want to see Tessa & Lynn do a version of Gnarls Barkley's Crazy, because that would probably be the coolest thing ever (at least for this week). Imagine Tessa doing that little scoffing-laughing thing Cee-Lo does right before he sings well bless your soul...--awesome.

added tessa and lynne tags

I guess I could/should have looked on Google Video too, but I was already buried under the sheer volume of videos from YouTube.

I mean, even considering duplicates, we are talking about several hundred versions. I imagine this exists for several other songs as well, I just don't have the fortitude to investigate.

Delmoi: I feel the same way. When I was growing up, the intersection of hot girls and girls who would have been willing to video themselves doing such and then post it publicly for worldwide consumption was basically an empty set.

So the wife drags me upstairs to see the latest thing she found on MeFi. i acquiesce, because that's what husbands do. i sit in front of her computer and i watch this video. And i really, really want to hate it.

There are these two chicks bouncing around, lipsyncing a cliche song. Hating this should be easy, right? i mean, they can't even decide who is doing the male voice and who is doing the female.

i was even going to complain about the fact that there isn't a single edit to make the overall final product look more polished. i mean, they left every bad flub of a line in there.

And after about a minute, i didn't give a shit. Here are these two chicks just dancing around and having way too much fun doing something unbeliveably dorky. And not caring.

i've heard bravery defined as being afraid of something and doing it anyway. So my inital reaction is to say how brave they are to present themselves in such a mockable way to the masses. But on further consideration, they aren't brave by that definition. They are clearly having too much fun; there is no fear here. They are obviously enjoying looking this dumb for our entertainment.

And that is so, totally cool.

Pomme and Kelly totally wipe the floor with Lynne and Tessa. L&T are always out of synch, especially on the barbie song. Whereas Kelly(? the one on the right) does this amazing thing where she sits there with a blank face until it's her turn wherepon her face explodes into action. When that's done it returns IMMEDIATELY to blank. And she's on the beat. And she keeps on doing it again and again! Could this be love?

A few comments:
  1. You can tell that Lynne and Tessa aren't native (or fluent) English speakers. This is why their lipsyncing looks off.
  2. The chick on the right in the spur of the moment video looks like she has a thing for the girl on the left.
  3. How much you want to bet that the hand bukkake version ended with a circle jerk...after the girl left?

Unfortunately we didn't have YouTube to package and broadcast our quotidien mediocrities to the internet for antisocial lamers to wank and obsess over. OMG teenaged girls. on the internets. *ummmmm hey*

naxosaxur: I think you may assume too much knowledge among the male population of what happens in teenage girl sleepovers. Understand a significant amount of speculation occurs, but true research is scant. The particular legend of "practicing frenching" suffers from a spectacular deficit of good data. I also think there may be a difference in "boldness" for lack of a better word between American and Western European girls.

I do not doubt for one minute that girls would put on records and sing into hairbrushes and giggle. It is the publishing for public consumption that surprises me and makes me marvel.

The lack of restraint, overt erotic themes, and sometimes absence of much clothing seems like something relegated to basement dens, not 56,000 views on YouTube. I would pay significant sums of real, hard, american currency for videos like this of my wife when she was a teenager. I would be able to live like a king upon a mountain, my every need catered to, just to keep them private.

Put another way, would you and your girlfriends have done something like this, and then made a tape of it and taken it to school the next day for play across the closed-circuit TV system? What about your entire town on cable access?

That's what this is, except much wider. The fact some of them are hot is nice, but completely besides the point. Some of the most amusing are from girls that are not what you would traditionally call "pretty".

The girls in this one would never so much as raise an eyebrow on the street, but I'll be damned if I'm not completely mesmerized. So it is something else besides "gawd she's hawt" going on. At least for me.

But Lynne... oh Lynne... she is truly a lovely creature, and a PERFECT example of where an assessment of a girl can rocket based on (apparent) personality. Is she cute? Sure... kind of average, but cute, yeah. But when she starts singing and dancing, she becomes a goddess. It is Charisma, a trait so elusive and impressive it deserves to be capitalized.

I think she is truly talented, but I think her gift is comedy and not music.
